BOYCEVILLE – The Boyceville girls’ cross country team was favored to win the Dunn-St. Croix Conference championship for a second year in a row and they did not disappoint at the meet held on their home course in Boyceville last Thursday, October 17.
Freshman Blake Jeske was the Bulldog girls’ top runner, breaking a school record that she set just a week earlier and earning a first-team all conference medal. Jeske came in second at 20:40.38 out of 38 runners.
Senior Kaysen Goodell of Colfax won the girls’ competition with a time of 20:34.78.
The other four members of the Bulldogs’ team that scored points earned second-team all conference medals because they placed between eighth and 14th. Those teammates were: Brooklyn Talmage, Ellie Engeman, Ashlyn Maska and Halle Tonn. They placed eighth, ninth, 10th and 11th respectively and ran the race between 21:52.89 and 22:33.06.
With all of their point-earning members receiving medals, they proved tough to beat. The team scored just 27 points beating the second-place team, which was Durand-Arkansaw by 19points. Elk Mound and Spring Valley placed third and fourth scoring 68 and 94 points, respectively. Colfax, Elmwood-Plum City, Mondovi and Glenwood City did not have enough runners to form teams.
Sydney Larson and Layla Score were the team’s sixth and seventh runners; they placed 17th and 29th respectively. All seven athletes will run at the sectional meet on October 26th in Cadott.
In the varsity boys’ competition, the Bulldogs placed fourth out of seven teams scoring 108 points. They were victorious over Elk Mound, Mondovi and Spring Valley. Glenwood City repeated as champs with 47 points, Durand-Arkansaw took second with 59 points and Colfax was third with 84 points.
Michael Montgomery was the first Bulldog to cross the finish line. His time was 19:03.64 which was good for 13th place and a second team all conference medal. Zayne Richardson of Durand won the race with a time of 16:42.81 out of 64 runners.
Forest Bettendorf and Isaac Williams were the team’s second and third runners. Bettendorf placed 18th with a time of 19:26.11 and Williams placed 21st with a time of 19:45.91.
Coming in fourth for the team was Nicholas Keely who placed 25th with a time of 20:09.10. Rounding out the scoring members of the team were Riley Naughton who placed 31st with a time of 20:35.88

Dominic Anderson and Bryce Humpal will join Montgomery, Bettendorf, Williams, Keely and Naughton at the WIAA sectional meet which will be held in Cadott this Saturday, October 26 at Whispering Pines Golf Course. The girls’ race is set to begin at 11 a.m. with the boys’ run to follow.
The State cross country meet will be held in Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday, November 2.
Middle School
In the middle school competition, the Boyceville girls took first and the boys placed second in the 3,000 meter race. Brielle Jeske was the top Boyceville middle school girls’ competitor placing second and Clayton Score won the boys’ race.
Other scoring members of the boys team were: Clyde Score who placed sixth, Zac Tonn who placed 11th, Easton Retz who placed 13th and Easton Lange who placed 21st.
In the girls’ race, the top runners for the Boyceville team were: Katie Maska who placed fourth, Raven Naughton who placed ninth, Boston Sutliff who placed 16th and Gracie Harvey who placed 18th.
