After pulling off an exciting five-set home win in the Dunn-St. Croix opener against Elk Mound last week, the Boyceville volleyball team was looking to put another conference match in the win column when it traveled to Elmwood to face the Wolves of Elmwood-Plum City September 24.
But, the momentum and excitement from that victory over Elk Mound had long since dissipated and the result was a straight sets loss to the Wolves last Tuesday evening.
In a close first set, EPC claimed a 25-20 win which seemed to set the stage for the action and outcomes that followed. The Wolves held the Bulldogs at bay taking the next two sets and the match with wins of 25-16 and 25-18.
In the match, Elmwood-Plum City registered twice the number of kills (40 to 20), assists (38 to 19) and service aces (8 to 4) that the visiting Bulldogs were able to record. The Wolves also finished with nine more defensive digs.
Individually, Aubrey Malean had five of the team’s kills and Chelsi Holden and Zoey Hellendrung each collected four. Delaney Olson had nine assists and Gretta Guy registered seven. Malean, Olson, Holden and Hellendrung each tallied an ace while serving. Holden also finished with just over a third or a dozen of the Bulldogs’ digs.
Boyceville (1-1, 5-10) plays a pair of conference matches this week. The Bulldogs were in Glenwood City last night (Tuesday, October 1) and return home this Thursday for a match versus the Lady Buffaloes of Mondovi.
