Colfax-Elk Mound boys’ golf season ends at sectional meet at Rice Lake

RICE LAKE — The Colfax-Elk Mound boys’ golf season concluded in sectional play last Tuesday.
The local linksmen shot a combined 363 to finish 11th out of 12 teams in the WIAA Division 2 Rice Lake Golf Sectional held at Turtleback Golf Course May 28.
Sophomore Orion Nichols led the Colfax-Elk Mound team with an 87 on the par-71 course. Nichols shot a 42 on the first nine holes and finished with a 45 on the second nine to place 35th in a field of 71 golfers.
The team’s next three golfers finished within a couple of strokes of one another. Junior Beau Borgwardt tallied a 91, thanks to a 42 on the first nine holes and a 49 on holes ten through 18, to place 49th. Senior Christian Ebert and Zane Brice finished just one and two strokes, respectively, behind Borgwardt. Ebert shot a 45 on the front nine and a 47 on the latter nine to card a 92 which put him in a two-way tie for 51st. Brice shot a 93 – 43 on the first nine holes and finished with a 50 – to place 53rd.
Sophomore Lucas Svee completed the Colfax-Elk Mound quintet by shooting a 97 which was the tally of a 49 on the front nine and a 48 on the back. He finished in a five-way tie for 58th place.
Lakeland Union won the sectional championship and a state berth with a score of 316. Amery scored a 322 to edge out fellow Middle Border Conference member Prescott by a single strokes to claim second and the final state team berth.
Prescott junior Tyler Reiter shot a one-over-par 72 to win the meet. Chase Van Ranst, a Baldwin-Woodville junior, and Ben Vande Voort, a freshman from Rice Lake, tied for second place with scores of 73. That trio also claimed the three individual state berths that were available to players that were not part of a state-qualifying team.
With the cooperative agreement between Colfax and Elk Mound expiring after the end of this current season, the two schools will play as separate teams in the Dunn-St. Croix and post-season next year before Elk Mound joins the Cloverbelt Conference in the fall of 2025.
