Colfax track teams host regional meet, Hydukovich, Hovde and Goodell take firsts

COLFAX — The quest for a chance to compete at the WIAA state track and field championships began May 20 for Colfax track athletes on their home grounds in the WIAA Division regional meet.
Needing to place in the top four of each individual event, several athletes moved on to the sectional meet which was held May 23 in Cameron. As a team, the Viking girls were third of 11 teams with 71 points with Fall Creek winning with 170 points, while the Viking boys were ninth of 11 teams, collecting 35 points as Fall Creek also took the boys’ team title with 165 points. The top eight places in each event were counted for team points.

Junior Kaysen Goodell and senior Jeanette Hydukovich were the top point scorers for the Viking girls as Goodell won the 1,600m race in 5:41.13. She also placed third in the 800m run in 2:35.03 and was a member of the 4x800m relay team along with Lauren Becker, Leila Hurlburt and Hannah Peterson which took third with a time of 10:54.20. Hydukovich dominated the throwing events, winning the shot put with another personal best throw at 38 feet 7.5 inches, and taking the discus throw with a heave of 127 feet even.
Peterson earned a second place in the 400m dash in 1:04.22, Clara Hydukovich claimed third in the discus at 106’ 10” for a personal record and Kennedy Shane was third in the shot put at 32’ 10”. Peterson placed sixth in the 800m run in 2:40.93 while Shane was sixth in the discus, tossing the plate 102’ 3” and Clara Hydukovich was also sixth in the shot put with a personal best 28’ 8” throw.
Also competing were Hurlburt in the 200m dash for 11th place with a personal best :30.45, Becker reached a height of 6’ 6” in the pole vault for 11th place, and in the long jump competition, Hurlburt was 21st with a leap of 10’ 5.25”, Kendall Wilson was 23rd at 10’ 3” and Stella Darmstadt was 25th at 8’ 11”.

Moving on to the sectional for the Viking boys are Theo Hovde after a first place in the 800m run with a personal best 2:05.39, a runner-up finish in the long jump at 19 feet 7.75 inches and a fourth place in the 4x400m relay with teammates Logan Swartz, Eli Ralph and Charlie Charbonneau, clocking in at 3:45.05.Charbonneau was also fourth in the 1,600m run in 5:04.2 and Swartz earned a sectional spot with a fourth in the long jump at 19’ 1.50”. John Riebe was seventh in the discus throw at 108-4.
The 4x200m relay team was ninth at 1:48.54 with team members Hayden Sarauer, Austin Johnson, Izaiah Sanders and Liem Schotter and Swartz was ninth in the 400m run in :59.44 while James Wahl was also ninth in the shot put with a personal best 37’ 9.25” throw. Placing 12th in the 200m dash was Schotter with a personal best :26.48 and Sanders also had a personal best in the same race at :18.56 for 16th place. Elijah Obermueller was 17th in the 400m dash in 1:16.27, Ralph was 15th in the shot put at 33’ 5.25” and 16th in the long jump, leaping 15’ 1.25”, Nate Edwards heaved the discus 94’ 5” for 13th place and Wahl was 16th in the same event at 86’ 10.5”. Riebe was 19th in the shot put at 30’ 2”.
