NEILLSVILLE — As a number 12 seed in the WIAA regional tournament, the Colfax Vikings traveled to Neillsville to take on the number five seed Neillsville-Granton team May 23.
Neillsville-Granton was 11-8 overall with a second place finish in the Cloverbelt East Conference. Although the Vikings had a few chances to score some runs, it just didn’t happen and they lost 3-0, ending their season with a 5-10 overall record.
Viking pitcher Mason Yarrington held the opponents in check most of the game, giving up a run in the first inning and two in the fourth.
Colfax had a golden opportunity to take an early lead in the first inning when Drew Buchner singled and Kade Anderson drew a walk but a strikeout and a couple of ground ball outs left Anderson at third base.
In the third, Buchner drew a walk, stole second and moved to third but the next three batters went out, leaving him there.
Brady Elmer smacked a two out single in the fourth but a strikeout followed and in the seventh inning, Grant Cook was hit by a pitch but three straight outs ended the game.
Yarrington, one of two seniors along with Anderson for the Vikings, threw a gem in his final high school game, allowing just two hits with six strikeouts with one free pass. Buchner and Elmer had the only hits for the Vikings as the team struck out seven times.
