Playing in four games last week, the Boyceville softball team was only able to pick up one victory which came against its rival from Glenwood City.
The Bulldogs started the week with an unexpected 5-1 home loss to Durand-Arkansaw on Monday, May 6. Boyceville bounced back for a 15-8 win and season sweep of the Hilltoppers when they played in Glenwood City Thursday, May 9 (see separarte story). Two days later, on a beautiful and warm Saturday, Boyceville traveled north to Shell Lake for a tournament where it lost both games. Shell Lake prevailed 6-2 in the opener and Northwood/Solon Springs nipped the Bulldogs 6-5 in the tourney finale.
Boyceville, now 9-4 in conference play and 12-6 overall, closed out the regular season at home with games against conference foe Elmwood-Plum City on Monday and Augusta on Tuesday. The Bulldogs earned the fourth seed and a first-round bye in the WIAA Division 4 playoffs and will host #5 Cadott in a regional semifinal game next Tuesday, May 21.
Durand-Arkansaw
Boyceville found itself in a scoreless battle when the Panthers of Durand-Arkansaw came to Tiffany Creek Elementary Field Monday, May 6 for a Dunn-St. Croix Conference softball contest.
Through the first four innings of the game, neither squad was able to score. But, that changed in the fifth inning when the Panthers used a couple of timely hits and a pair of Bulldog errors to score five runs. Boyceville finally broke through for a run in the bottom half of that same inning.
But, as it turned out, that was all the scoring there would be as Boyceville lost 5-1.
Hits were at a premium in the game as the teams finished with just four hits each.
Kendra Oestrich had a double and Hannah Dunn, Jadynn Traxler and Kaitlyn Mittlestadt each singled to account for the Bulldog hits.
Aubrey Malean lost the pitching battle to the Panthers Kaci Brunkow. Malean took the loss despite striking out eight Panther batters and walking just one. Brunkow also had eight Ks and walked three but allowed just the one Bulldog run.
Shell Lake Tournament
Boyceville opened against the host Lakers when they played in the Shell Lake Tournament Saturday, May 11.
Knotted at one run apiece through four innings of action, Shell Lake enjoyed a five-run fifth to take a 6-1 lead.
Boyceville scored a run in the bottom of the fifth but that was all as it fell 6-2.
The Bulldogs picked up just four hits in the game, singles by Aubrey Malean, Delaney Olson, Jadynn Traxler and Kaitlyn Mittlestadt.
Malean suffered the pitching loss after surrendering six runs on seven hits. She finished with four strikeouts and walked just one.
In the second game of the day, Boyceville built a 5-2 lead on Northwood/Solon Springs after four innings of play.
In the fifth inning, Northwood/Solon Springs scored three times to deadlock the contest and then won it with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Boyceville did finish with a nine to seven edge in hits. Aubrey Malean finished the game 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and scored three times. Hannah Dunn picked up a pair of hits and Lillian Lane had a triple.
Malean suffered the pitching loss. She gave up seven hits and the six runs while striking out nine and walking five.
