ELK MOUND -— The Colfax softball team improved their overall record to 7-1 and 4-0 in Dunn-St. Croix Conference play, and after a 5-2 win over Elk Mound they sit all alone at the top of the conference.
In a well played game between two solid teams, the Vikings beat the Mounders in Elk Mound April 12. Colfax took an early 1-0 lead when Laikyn Beyer reached second on a Mounder fielding error and came home on a throwing error after Jada Anderson sent a hard shot to the third baseman. Brynn Sikora slammed a long fly ball to center field but Elli Beskow chased it down to end the inning.
Colfax struck again in the third inning when Beyer reached first on a fielder’s choice on a ball hit back to the pitcher who threw McKenna Shipman out at second. Anderson smacked a sharp single to left, Sikora sent a hard shot through the infield for an RBI and Audrey Ebert’s huge double made it 3-0 before the inning ended when Mounder second baseman Kendra Garnett stretched to snag a hard hit ball by Emma Medin.
Viking hurler Beyer gave up a lead-off single to Jaidynn Sarauer in the bottom of the third, and Lexi Solberg laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to advance her. Beyer whiffed the next batter and forced a fly out to end the inning, leaving Sarauer stranded.

Elk Mound pitcher Hailey Meyer put the Vikings down in order in the top of the fourth and the Mounders finally broke through on the scoreboard in their half of the inning. Meyer singled, stole second and after a strikeout, Autumn Moquin smashed a double to left, bringing Meyer in. Beyer bore down after that and whiffed the next two batters to end the inning.
Colfax tacked on another run in the fifth when Sikora singled and moved around the bases with help from a wild pitch and scored on Hannah Peterson’s base hit for a 4-1 advantage. The Mounders mounted a comeback in the bottom of the inning as Sarauer set down a near perfect bunt to reach base safely. After swiping second base, Sarauer came home on an infield error, but once again Beyer and the Viking defense held as a grounder to second produced the first out, the runner on first was gunned down by catcher Sikora for the second out, and a fly ball to right ended the rally.
The Mounders made another attempt to come back in the sixth with a walk to Lexi Joachim and a single by Alivia Baskin, but Joachim was thrown out at third base trying to advance.
The Vikings added an insurance run in the seventh after Anderson reached base by beating out a ground ball, moved up on an error by the Mounders and came home on Peterson’s second double of the game.

Trying to start another rally, Sarauer started the bottom of the seventh with her third hit of the game and moved to second on another sacrifice bunt by Solberg. A ground ball out and a nice running catch by center fielder Peterson ended the game.
“We know Elk Mound is a good team and would probably make a run at us,” Colfax coach John Dickinsen. “But we managed to persevere and get through those innings,” he added.
Colfax banged out nine hits including a pair of doubles from Peterson with two RBIs, and two hits from Anderson. Ebert slammed a double and picked up an RBI with Sikora also bringing in a run. Beyer picked up the win, striking out nine Mounders and relinquishing just one free pass.
Sarauer led the Mounders with a three-hit performance while Meyer banged a pair of hits including a double. Meyer finished with seven Ks and gave up one free pass from the circle.
