ELK MOUND — In the second round of Dunn-St. Croix Conference basketball play, the Colfax girls traveled the short distance to Elk Mound to face off against the Mounders Thursday, February 1. The Mounders were coming off a pretty big win over Eau Claire Regis three days earlier and were 19-0 for the season and 9-0 in conference play, all alone at the top.
For the Vikings, it was their only game of the week and they carried an 8-2 conference record and were 13-6 overall. Elk Mound is ranked sixth in Division 3 according to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association poll and had defeated the Vikings their first go round back in December.
It’s not too often you see a pair of 1,000-point scorers face off against each other but fans in the stands were able to watch Colfax senior McKenna Shipman and Elk Mound junior Ellie Schiszik compete. Both girls achieved 1,000-point status earlier in the season, but on this night their only concern was trying to win the game.
Carly Mohr started things off with a bucket for the Mounders but a couple of Jada Anderson free throws and a layup by Meadow Keltner put the Vikings up 4-2. The next few minutes were all Elk Mound however, as they rattled off 12 consecutive points starting with a Lydia Levra triple. Allie Robel scored on a fast break after a Colfax miss, Schiszik drilled a three pointer and added a layup and it was 14-4 for the Mounders. The Vikings turned the ball over five times during the stretch and were off the mark on three shot attempts.
Kaysen Goodell stopped the bleeding with a deuce while Anderson hit back to back buckets to cut the Mounder lead to 15-10. Mohr and Goodell traded deuces before Schiszik cut loose with another long range shot for a 20-12 Elk Mound advantage. Anderson did her best to keep the Vikings close with two more free tosses but the halftime score was 20-14 in the Mounders’ favor.
Robel scored in the paint to start the second half, and Shipman scored her first points of the night to counter. Goodell drove through the lane for a deuce but the Mounders went on another scoring spree. Schiszik and Levra both canned triples and after an Allie Roder fast break shot it was 30-18 for the Mounders. Autumn Niggemann dropped in a close range shot for Colfax and

Brynn Sikora stole the ball and scored on a layup, but a shot from behind the arc by the Mounders’ Belle Kongshaug upped their advantage to 33-22.
The lead remained at 11 when Sierra Shipman and Sikora both scored from close range while Schiszik drove through the lane for two, then was fouled on a three point attempt on Elk Mound’s next possession. She sank 2-of-3 freebies for a 37-26 lead.
After a McKenna Shipman layup, the Mounders maintained at least a 10-point lead until McKenna Shipman drained a long three pointer, then found Jeanette Hydukovich under the basket on a very long throw for a bucket.
The score was 44-37 for the Mounders and Roder upped the lead with two free tosses. Niggemann hit the boards and pulled down an offensive rebound and was fouled, making both freebies and Hydukovich scored from close range, but Elk Mound held a 48-41 advantage with under two minutes to go.
The Mounders spent those last two minutes at the charity stripe with Schiszik hitting 2-of-4 free tosses before Anderson drilled a final triple to get the Vikings closer, down 50-44. Schiszik took care of business with two more free tosses and Levra added a final one to seal the 53-44 win.
Schiszik finished above her 15 point average with 23 points with a trio of triples and a 10-for-14 performance at the foul line. Robel and Levra both added eight points. The Mounders finished with six treys and were 17-for-28 at the charity stripe.
Viking senior Jada Anderson had a phenomenal game, leading the team in scoring with 15 points. Leading scorer McKenna Shipman missed the two previous games with an ankle sprain and was held to seven points by the stingy Mounder defense. The Vikings connected on just two shots from behind the arc and were 8-of-14 at the foul line. The loss halted their nine-game winning streak.
“We are happy to get the win,” Elk Mound coach Jordan Kongshaug said, “It was a hard fought win. I was proud of our kids keeping their composure throughout the game. We made plays when we needed them,” he added.
Elk Mound (10-0, 20-0) took a two-and-a-half game lead over second-place Colfax and Durand Arkansaw, both 8-3 in league play, with just two weeks remaining in the regular season. The Mounders play three of their final four games on the road. They

were at Spring Valley last evening, play in Elmwood versus the Wolves of Elmwood-Plum City Friday and are in Glenwood City for a makeup contest Monday, February 12. Meanwhile the Vikings hosted Elmwood-Plum City Tuesday and travel to Glenwood City Friday and Fall Creek next Monday, February 12.
Mounders defeat Ramblers
A big opening half carried the Elk Mound girls to a 53-43 non-conference road win over Eau Claire Regis Monday, January 29.
The Lady Mounders jumped to a 28-15 halftime advantage as they hit four of their five three-point shots in the first half including a pair by sophomore Belle Kongshaug and one each from Ellie Schiszik and Allie Roder. Schiszik had seven points at the break while Roder and Kongshaug went to the locker room with six and Allie Robel had five points.
The Ramblers (8-3, 15-4), who sit third in a very competitive Cloverbelt West Conference that features the state’s current number two-ranked squad in Division 4 and defending Division 5 state champion Chippewa Falls McDonell Central and Fall Creek (17-3) who the Mounders also defeated 50-47 way back on November 21, tried to rally in the second as they nearly doubled their offensive output with 28 points.
Robel, however, helped the Mounders keep pace as she netted nine of her game-leading 14 points in that final 18 minutes of action by hitting three deuces and 3-of-5 free throws as Elk Mound finished by scoring 25 second-half points. Robel also pulled down a high 11 of her team’s 26 rebounds. Schiszik added five more points including the team’s final three to finish with a dozen points and three steals, Rodel went 4-for-4 at the charity stripe for a final tally of ten points and had four assists while Lydia Levra hit a hoop and

2-of-3 free tosses to finish with six points along with Kongshaug.
Elk Mound finished the game 18-for-44 shooting with a 5-14 effort from three-point land and was 12-for-17 at the free throw line.
Regis, who also finished with five triples and a 10-for-13 effort at the line, was led by Izzy Reichert with 12 points and ten from Ashley Chilson.
