The new year has treated the Bulldog boys’ basketball team well. Winners of four of six since the calendar flipped, Boyceville has managed to claw themselves out of a hole to sit at 8-8 on the year and hoping to notch a couple of victories to improve their standing come playoff selection time.
While the week started out great with a road win against Eleva-Strum, the Bulldogs struggled to find their offensive footing at home versus Spring Valley. The split week leaves Boyceville’s record even at 9-9 (3-6) and in sixth place in the conference standings.
Boyceville opened action on January 22 traveling to Eleva-Strum. The Bulldogs put up 32 points each half and left town with a decisive 64-39 victory over the Cardinals.
They concluded their weekly schedule on January 25 hosting second-place Spring Valley in a rematch hoping to avenge an early December loss. However, the Cardinals continued their dominance with a 63-37 win.
The Bulldogs get back in action with a road game against Colfax (6-11, 3-5) on January 30 and a home non-conference matchup with Clayton (6-9) on February 5. Both games start at 7:15 p.m.
Eleva-Strum
The two-man wrecking crew of Caden Wold and Nick Olson led the charge for the Bulldogs on the night. The two guards went a combined 11-of-17 from behind the arc and accounted for 42 of Boyceville’s 64 points on the night.
The Bulldogs opened the first half by draining seven three pointers, including three apiece from Olson and Wold to launch to a 14-point advantage at 32-18.
The duo combined for five additional three pointers after halftime to pull away for the 25-point win.
Wold finished with a team high 24 points on the night, including going 5-for-9 from behind the arc. Olson was near perfect from beyond the three point line, going 6-for-8 with 18 points. Devin Halama led all Bulldogs with seven rebounds.
Spring Valley
Unlike their December 7 matchup where the Bulldogs fell behind by 20 points at halftime, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead. Three pointers by Olson and Braden Roemhild helped Boyceville take a 13-8 advantage midway through the first half.
Unfortunately, the Bulldog shooting went cold. They only manage two field-goals the final 9:00 minutes to go into halftime down 24-17.
While a pair of three pointers from Wold to start the second half helped to right the offensive ship for the Bulldogs, the Cardinals poured in 19 points to begin the half and pull out to an 43-29 lead.
A three pointer from Carson Roemhild and a field goal from Peter Wheeldon were the only baskets the Bulldogs managed down the stretch as Spring Valley pulled away for the 26-point win.
Carson Roemhild was the only Bulldog in double figures with ten points. Olson was close behind with nine, and Olson put in eight on the evening.
