With an opportunity to up pick up another dual or two, Glenwood City and Durand-Arkansaw moved their Dunn-St. Croix dual to River Falls last Thursday, January 18 where the two teams not only wrestled each other but River Falls.
Farmington, MN was part of the action as well but only competed against the host Wild Cats due to a limitation on the number of matches.
The Hilltoppers split their action in River Falls, pummeling the Panthers of Durand-Arkansaw 78-6 to move to 2-0 in conference duals and losing a close contest to River Falls by a score of 42-33.
Two days later, most of Glenwood City’s wrestlers competed in the highly competitive St. Croix Falls Wrestling Classic while four traveled east to Wausau for the 2024 Wisconsin State Challenge.
At St. Croix Falls, eight of the Hilltoppers’ ten varsity wrestlers placed headlined by junior Wyatt Unser and sophomore Landon Obermueller who won gold at their respective weights to lead Glenwood City to a fifth-place finish out of 21 teams at the prestigious tournament.
This week, Glenwood City will host Boyceville in a key Dunn-St. Croix showdown Thursday. The following day, the Toppers will take part in the Whitetail Shootout in Menomonie.
Durand-Arkansaw
Glenwood City dispatched Durand-Arkansaw quickly when the squads met at River Falls quad Thursday, January 18.
The Hilltoppers claimed the dual, which counted in the conference standings, 78 to 6.
Glenwood City got pins by Zeb Holden (138), Mitchell McGee (150), Abe Draxler (157), Will Standaert (165), Preston Arvey (113) and Wyatt Unser (126) and were awarded seven forfeits.
Durand-Arkansaw’s only points came in the 144-pound match where the Panthers’ Joey Baker earned a pin fall over the Toppers’ Andrew Blaser.

River Falls
Glenwood City had its chance to upend River Falls when they tussled January 18 on the Wild Cats’ mat.
But, River Falls was able to flip some matches and thereby the outcome to post a 42-33 win over Glenwood City.
Junior Mitchel McGee gave the Toppers a 6-0 advantage when he opened the dual with a pin of Robbie Anderson at 150 pounds.
The Wild Cats won the next thee matches with falls but the Hilltoppers knotted the score at 18 all when Conner Gross pinned at 190 and Jackson Logghe received a forfeit at 215 pounds.
River Falls went back in front with a pin at heavyweight only to have Glenwood City counter with a pin fall by Will Obermueller at 106 pounds to bring the dual back to even at 24.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats won four of the final six matches including two with pins to earn he 42-33 win.

St. Croix Falls
After back-to-back eighth-place finishes, Glenwood City came in fifth in the 21-school field at last Saturday’s St. Croix Falls Wrestling Challenge despite having just ten varsity wrestlers compete in the tournament.
Glenwood City finished with 116 points. St. Croix Falls won its own tournament with 201.5.
Landon Obermueller struck gold at 113 pounds as did Wyatt Unser at 126 pounds. Mitchell McGee took third at 150 pounds.
Landon Obermueller opened his tournament with two pins. He then bested Beau Hudoba of Ogilvie, MN 6-3 in the semifinals and won the championship over Roman McKinney of Pine City, MN via a 10-3 decision.
Top-ranked Wyatt Unser received a first-round bye at 126 pounds. He then pinned his next two opponents before scoring an 8-2 win over Hudson’s Noah Moltzan in the championship bout. Unser improved to 33-0.
Junior Mitchell McGee (29-6) received a bye and then scored a major 12-1 decision over Reed Church of Osceola in the 150-pound quarterfinals. A 3-2 loss to Prescott’s Nolan Thomley in the semifinal sent McGee to the third-place match where he bested Totino Grace’s Payton Herbst with the pin fall.
Conner Gross (190) was fifth, Blake Fayerweather (285) placed sixth, Will Obermueller (106) and Zeb Holden (138) were seventh, and Preston Arvey (106) placed eighth.
In the junior varsity tournament, Abe Draxler took first at 150, seconds went to Charlie Bogie (120), Zach Bacon (157) and Waylon Wagner (165) and Gus Kohler placed third at 215 pounds.
Wisconsin Challenge
Four Toppers competed in the Wisconsin State Challenge in Wausau January 20.
Savanna Millermon took second at 100 pounds.
Great Draxler (145), Corey Strong (113) and Logan Hillman (126) also competed but did not place.
