BOYCEVILLE — Building on its one-point victory over rival Glenwood City the previous week, the Boyceville boys’ basketball team delivered a second-half knock out punch when Mondovi visited the Dog House last Tuesday, January 16.
With just a three-point halftime lead, the Bulldogs shifted their offense into high gear for the second half and outscored the visiting Buffaloes 38-13 to secure a 59-31 victory.
Boyceville was hoping the momentum from the Mondovi win would carry over to Thursday’s home contest against conference leader Durand-Arkansaw.
Unfortunately, it did not.
The Panthers outshot the Bulldogs from three-point range banging down 13 triples to seven from the Bulldogs as they turned a 15-point halftime advantage into a 77-49 win.
Boyceville was in Eleva-Strum Monday night for a doubleheader with the girls’ squad. The Bulldogs will host second-place Spring Valley Thursday and are in Colfax next Tuesday, January 30.
Mondovi
Both teams got off to a slow start when Mondovi visited Boyceville January 16.
Nick Olson led the Bulldogs’ first-half offense with eight points which included a three. Braden Roemhild dropped in a pair of three pointers and Grant Kaiser netted five points to help Boyceville take a 21-18 lead into the locker room.
While Kaiser added three hoops and Olson canned another three, other Bulldog players brought their offensive assets to bear in the second half.
After a quiet opening frame that saw him make just one basket, senior Devin Halama scored ten of his 12 points in that decisive second half. Fellow senior Peter Wheeldon, who went scoreless through the first 18 minutes of action, caught fire in the final stanza as he scored a hoop and converted on all six of his free throw attempts to finish with eight points. Two other Boyceville players without any first half scores, Carson Roemhild and Jon Madison, netted five and four points, respectively.
The cumulative effect was a 59-31 win for the Bulldogs.
Halama’s 12 points led the Bulldogs with Kaiser and Olson also finishing in double digits with 11 points each.
Boyceville also enjoyed a huge advantage on the boards as it out-rebounded Mondovi 44 to 24 with Kaiser and Halama hauling down 14 each.
Boyceville finished with six triples while Mondovi had none.

Durand-Arkansaw
What a difference a few days can make.
After finding its offensive mojo in the second-half of the win over Mondovi two days earlier, it seemingly evaporated into the ether when the conference leaders from Durand-Arkansaw came calling at the Dog House Friday, January 19.
The Bulldogs tried to keep pace with the Panthers hitting seven three pointers but were simply outmatched in almost every phase of the game including from three-point land from where Durand-Arkansaw sank 13 baskets.
That helped the Panthers turn a 40-25 halftime advantage into a 77-49 rout.
Kaiser and Halama shared the scoring honors for the Bulldogs as both tallied a dozen points and Olson added 11.
Halama also topped the Bulldogs’ rebounding charts with nine, Kaiser added eight and Carson Roemhild five. Halama and Braden Roemhild each had four assists.
Durand had three players finish in double figures. Dane Bates led with 16, Parker Almsted finished with 13 and Luke Weber added a dozen.
