ELK MOUND — The Elk Mound volleyball team may be playing with a lot of different players this season but it didn’t seem to matter when the Colfax girls came to visit them on Tuesday, September 26. The Mounders were 2-0 in Dunn-St. Conference play, looking to stay undefeated while the Lady Vikings were 1-1 with the idea of staying in the hunt for a conference title.
Things were looking up for Colfax when last year’s all-conference player Jeanette Hydukovich was back in the lineup after sitting out a couple of weeks with a sprained ankle. But Hydukovich and her teammates didn’t seem to be in sync most of the night and the Mounders took advantage, winning the match in three sets 25-15, 25-21 and 25-13.
Set number one was knotted at 6-6 before Elk Mound used a run of five points for an 11-6 lead. McKenna Shipman scored a point for the Vikings and a pair of Mounder errors cut their lead to 11-9. Elk Mound added a pair of points for a 13-9 advantage but Jada Anderson slammed a kill to bring Colfax closer. The Mounders went up 17-10 on a couple of Viking errors, an Andrea Rosenthal smash and one of several double hit violations called on the Vikings on the night. Miley Carlton put down a kill then followed up with a pair of service aces and it was 20-11 in the Mounder’s favor. They continued to pull away and scored the winning point on a tip shot at the net.
The second set played out a lot more like Colfax-Elk Mound volleyball matches have been the last several years. The score was tied 11 times and for the first half, neither team led by more than two points. At 4-4, Anderson blocked a shot for a 5-4 Viking lead but another double hit knotted it again. An Anderson tip, a Mounder error and a Hydukovich block put the Vikings up 8-5. Two more Viking hitting mistakes and a kill from Allie Roder allowed Elk Mound to tie it up 8-8 Roder knotted it at 9-9 on a tip shot and a run of seven points by her fellow Mounders gave them a 16-9 lead.
A serving error on their part finally ended the streak and the Vikings mounted their own run. Brynn Sikora put down a kill, Hydukovich smacked an ace serve, a double hit call on the Mounders, a Lydia Polkoski kill and another by Hydukovich knotted it up at 17-17. Colfax went up on a Sikora kill but another double hit violation tied it 18-18. An Elk Mound serving error and a Rosenthal slam made it 19-19 and Roder put the Mounders up 20-19 on a tip shot. A misplaced shot by the Vikings and two Mounder errors made it 21-21 but Elk Mound finished the set off on a Roder kill, a Kendra Garnett serve that was not returned, a Viking error and the final kill by Roder for the 2-0 set lead.
Using solid net play including two Carlton kills and another by Taylor Frinack, along with several Colfax mistakes suddenly had Elk Mound up 8-0 in the third set. A double hit call on them broke the streak and the Vikings began another comeback attempt. An Anderson ace serve, a Shipman kill and a couple of Mounder hitting mistakes brought the score to 8-5 and fans who were around back in 2016 were maybe wondering if a Colfax comeback was in the making. But a couple of Rosenthal kill shots along with her ace serve and a Roder slam gave the Mounders a 15-6 advantage. Roder and Shipman traded points at the net and Levra and Hydukovich did the same making it 19-10 for Elk Mound. They upped the lead off a Carlton slam and a Levra serve before Hydukovich smacked a kill shot.
The teams traded serving errors and the Mounders put the score at 24-13 on a Rosenthal slam, and it was set and match on yet another double hit call on the Vikings.
The Mounders finished the match with 29 kills and only 12 errors compared to 14 kills and 15 errors by the Vikings. Carlton came up with nine kills, two service aces and 10 digs, Roder added nine kills and two blocks and Rosenthal slammed five kills and blocked a pair of shots. Frinack led in assists with 25, Levra picked up 14 digs and Garnett added seven digs.
Shipman, Anderson and Sikora all had three kills for Colfax with Shipman leading in assists with nine along with two blocks. Anderson dug the ball 12 times as did Hydukovich who added a couple of ace serves. Jordyn Bowe came up with nine digs and four assists while Ava Sedivy finished with five digs.
Colfax has a pair of conference games and a weekend tournament this week. The Vikings hosted Elmwood-Plum City Tuesday and are in Glenwood City Thursday before traveling to Altoona this Saturday for a multi-team invitational. Next week, Colfax will close out the regular season hosting Mondovi on Tuesday, October 10 and Durand-Arkansaw on Thursday, October 12.
Elk Mound, meanwhile, has only three matches, all in conference contests, remaining on its regular-season slate. The Mounders play in Elmwood this Thursday, October 5 versus Elmwood-Plum City, host Glenwood City next Tuesday, October 10 and finish off at Mondovi on Thursday, October 12.
