COLFAX — The Colfax “Vikings” volleyball team opened its 2023 campaign on its home court last Tuesday, August 22 when it hosted a quadrangular meet.
The Lady Viking spikers finished 2-1 in the meet having bested both Stanley-Boyd and Clayton three sets to none before falling to Ellsworth two sets to one.
In its first match of the quad and season, Colfax took on the Stanley-Boyd Orioles and prevailed 25-13 in the first set and then pulled out wins of 25-20 and 15-11 in tight second and third set action. McKenna Shipman had five kills in the match to lead the Vikings in that category and added seven digs and an ace serve. Aubrey Rihn and Jeanette Hydukovich each tallied four kills. Jada Anderson along with Emma Medin were tops in service aces with two. Anderson also had a team-leading 16 digs and nine sets with Medin adding eight digs.
In the middle match versus Clayton, Colfax dominated the first set winning 25-12. But, the final two sets were much closer with the Vikings taking down the Bears 25-20 in set number two and 15-13 in a tight third and final set to earn the sweep. Shipman and Jeanette Hydukovich each finished with half a dozen kills in the match with Jada Anderson registering four. That trio also had six of the team’s nine service aces (two apiece) while Anderson notched a team-high nine digs with Hydukovich registering seven and Shipman six.
The final match of the quad featured a pair of unbeatens – Ellsworth against host Colfax. It took all three sets to determine a winner. After splitting two close sets, Ellsworth came out on top, 25-21, in the opening set while Colfax won the second, 25-23, the Panthers prevailed 15-11 in the third set to take the match two sets to one. In that match, Jada Anderson had five kills and 13 digs (both team highs), a pair of service aces and three blocks. Jeanette Hydukovich tallied four kills, five solo blocks, two aces and had six digs. Brynn Sikora added three kills, and McKenna Shipman seven digs and 11 assists, while Jordyn Bowe chipped in with 7 assists.
Colfax also participated in a multi-school invitational at Neillsville High School this past Saturday, August 26. Colfax lost two close sets to Pittsville, 23-25 and 24-26. The Vikings also played host Neillsville but no results were reported to the Messenger or posted online prior to Monday’s printing deadline.
The Vikings’ only action this week was a triangular held last evening (Tuesday, August 29) at Bloomer High School with the host and Menomonie. Colfax will then be off until next Tuesday, September 5 when they travel to Somerset for a non-conference match.
