Olson Family Story
Steve and Angie Olson and family are the fourth generation of Olsons to dairy farm in New Haven Township. Steve’s great-grandparents, Carl and Clara, started with 40 acres, then his grandparents, Clyde and Muriel, continued the tradition, and eventually, his parents, Pork and Carol.
Angie was raised on a Guernsey farm in the Weston/Irvington area and is the daughter of Laverne and Donna Weber.
The couple was married in 2001 and were blessed with a daughter, Megan, in 2002 and a son, Nicholas, in 2005.
Steve and Angie bought the current farm in 1998. In 2008, they remodeled the barn and installed a milking parlor which was completed in late July and the couple officially took over the farming duties as the next generation at the new farm that Angie and Steve named “Maple Hills Dairy.”
Today, the farm consists of 540 acres and an additional 100 rented acres. Maple Hills Dairy crops about 400 acres of alfalfa, corn, oats, and soybeans, all of which are fed back to the livestock via a TMR mixer.
The cows enjoy free-range pasturing all year and are milked twice a day. The milk is shipped to AMPI in Jim Falls by Nelson Ag Transfer of Boyceville.
Maple Hills Dairy has received numerous milk quality awards for having an average somatic cell count under 200,000 annually. The Olsons were also honored to receive the “2022 Farm Family of the Year” Award from the Menomonie Area Chamber of Commerce for its impactful contributions to Dunn County’s agricultural industry, resource stewardship, and conservation practices.
In addition to farming, Angie is a full-time employee at Bremer Bank, where she has been an employee for 31 years. Megan will be a senior at the University of St. Thomas, where she is majoring in marketing. Nick will be a senior at Boyceville High School.
The Olsons said that they are fortunate to have one full-time employee and two part-time employees to help around the farm. The family are appreciative for their employees, Jeremy Franko, Jonah Cline, Ben Butikofer, and our newest employee, cow dog Ruby Redd, and all they do!
