Three weeks after it was supposed to have begin a new campaign, the Colfax-Elk Mound boys’ golf team finally teed off on the 2023 season last week.
And what a busy start it was.
The team played in five meets including three Dunn-St. Croix conference matches in just a five-day span.
The new season got underway last Tuesday, April 25 with a conference doubleheader at Glen Hills Golf Course near Glenwood City where the local linksters finished third in both nine-hole meets. The following day, Wednesday, April 26, Colfax-Elk Mound hosted the annual 18-hole Whitetail Invitational and finished fifth out of 13 participating schools. Playing for the third straight day, the squad hit the Spring Valley Golf Course for the third conference meet and once again finished third. After a day off, Colfax-Elk Mound returned to competition last Saturay at the Lake Wissota Golf Course in Chippewa Falls to compete in the Chippewa Falls Invitational, finishing last out of 11 squads which included several larger schools from the Big Rivers Conference.
With a condensed schedule, Colfax-Elk Mound will be playing in a trio of conference meets this week. C-EM played in Durand Monday and at Mondovi on Tuesday before returning to Durand this Friday. Next Monday, May 8, Colfax-Elk Mound hosts a conference meet at Whitetail and will head back to Mondovi the next day, May 9.
Glen Hills – Meet #1
Christian Ebert and Zane Brice both shot under 50 in the season and conference opener at the Glen Hills Golf Course April 25 to lead the Colfax-Elk Mound boys’ varsity golf team.
Ebert shot a 46 while Brice was a shot back with a 47. Beau Borgwardt finished with a 50, Ethan Oas carded a 58 and Matt Hanson rounded out the individual scoring with a 59 in the nine-hole meet.
Colfax-Elk Mound finished third with a team score of 201. Last year’s reigning D-SC champion Durand won the meet with a 175, host Glenwood City was two strokes back with a 177, Spring Valley shot a 214 and Mondovi finished fifth with a 245.
The Colfax-Elk Mound junior varsity tied Glenwood City for second place with a score of 210. Lucas Svee shot one of the best rounds of anyone that day as the freshman finished with a 43. Connor Albright had a 53, Kyle Irwin carded a 54, Ty Meyer shot a 60 and Mason Mohr finished with a 62.
Glen Hills – Meet #2
Playing a second conference meet at Glen Hills immediately following the first, Colfax-Elk Mound was able to shave nine strokes off its team tally to finish with a 192. Unfortunately, the team still finished third out of the five conference schools.
Durand captured the second meet as well finishing in first with a stroke total of 169. Glenwood City placed second with a 174, Spring Valley was fourth with a 204 and Mondovi placed fifth after scoring a 228.
Individually for Colfax-Elk Mound, Zane Brice was able to cut four strokes off his first-meet score and finished with a nine-hole score of 43 to lead the varsity team. Beau Borgwardt was next with a 46, followed by Lucas Svee with a 51 and Connor Albricht and Christian Ebert each tallied a 52.
The C-EM junior varsity took third with a 223 as Ty Meyer shot a 53, Ethan Oas a 55, Kyle Irwin carded a 56 and Matt Hanson and Mason Mohr both finished with 59s.
Whitetail Invitational
A day after playing a pair of Dunn-St. Croix Conference meets at Glen Hills, Colfax-Elk Mound hit its home links for the annual Whitetail Invitational.
The locals tallied a collective team score of 373 in the April 26, 18-hole tournament to place fifth among the 13 participating schools. The meet was dominated by the Middle Border Conference as Ellsworth placed first with a 338, Prescott (344) took second, and Osceola and Somerset (357) tied for third.
Colfax-Elk Mound had a pair of top ten individual finishes among the field of 65 golfers. Junior Zane Brice took seventh with a score of 84 while freshman Orion Nichols, with an 85, finished one shot and one place behind Brice. Another freshman, Lucas Svee, shot a 95 to finish in a six-way tie for 23rd, junior Christian Ebert finished 42nd with a stroke tally of 109 and sophomore Beau Borgwardt was 44th with a 110.
Spring Valley
Hitting the links for a third straight day, Colfax-Elk Mound played in D-SC meet number three which was held Thursday, April 27 at Spring Valley Golf Course.
Once again, Colfax-Elk Mound placed third in the final standings after finishing with 193 strokes. Durand won its third straight conference meet with a 170, Glenwood City came in second after scoring a 181, Spring Valley shot a 197 on its own course to take fourth and Mondovi finished last with a 218.
Leading the varsity for C-EM was sophomore Beau Borgwardt with a 46, which was good for ninth place. Juniors Christian Ebert and Zane Brice and freshman Orion Nichols all finished within two strokes of one another. Ebert shot a 48 to place 12th, Brice took 13th with a 49 and Nichols shot a 50 to take 14th. Freshman Lucas Svee finishe off the varsity scores with a 52 to place 16th.
Chippewa Falls Invite
After a one-day respite, the Colfax-Elk Mound boys’ golf team returned to the links on Saturday, April 29 for the Chippewa Falls Invitational at Lake Wissota Golf Course.
C-EM finished with a score of 399 in the 18-hole tourney to finish last among the 11 competing schools that featured several Division 1 schools from the Big Rivers Conference.
Junior Zane Brice was the squad’s top finisher as he shot an 85 to place 28th. Freshman Orion Nichols carded a 96 to take 44th. Sophomore Beau Borgwardt finished with a 106 to take 52nd, freshman Lucas Svee came in 53rd with a 112 and senior Ty Meyer shot a 120 to place 54th.
Eau Claire Memorial won the meet with a 310. Hudson and McDonell-Regis both shot scores of 316 to share second place.
