GCHS’s Kyra Dahl selected for state honors band

KYRA DAHL

Kyra Dahl, a sophomore at Glenwood City High School has been selected for the 2023 Wisconsin State Honors Band.  Kyra plays the French horn and auditioned for the group in February.  Band director Mr. Lamb stated, “It’s a very intense audition process including scales, a Class A solo, articulation studies, a college etude, and sight reading.  The process is very similar to what a student would go through auditioning for college scholarships or a position with a military branch band.  Kyra worked very hard.”  Kyra is the daughter of Andy Dahl and Lynette Wood.

The WSMA State Honors Music Project is nationally recognized as one of the finest opportunities for young people. Regardless of your future college major, membership in the High School State Honors Music Project helps set you apart from other college applicants. Students selected for the WSMA State Honors Music Project participate in an intensive four day summer camp in June at UW-Green Bay and perform in Madison during late October as part of the Wisconsin State Music Conference.

The 2023 Wisconsin State Honors Band will be under the direction of Dr. Peter Haberman who serves as the director of bands and professor of music at Concordia College where he conducts The Concordia Band. He also leads the Echo Band, works with student conductors, teaches music education courses, and coordinates the comprehensive band program. Prior to his appointment at Concordia, Haberman held similar positions as director of bands at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Bucknell University.

Haberman maintains an active schedule as a conductor, guest conductor, and clinician, having worked in more than 10 states and on five continents. His ensembles have performed at both national and international conferences and music festivals. He also has served as music director for many community ensembles including the Chippewa Valley Youth Symphony.

Prior to his college career, Haberman spent several years teaching at the Mercer Island School District in Washington and the Maple Lake School District in Minnesota. He was honored to be the recipient of the Educator of the Year Award and the Principal’s Award for Outstanding Teaching at Mercer Island, and the Maple Lake Employee of the Year Award.
