COLFAX — Once again this year, Music in the Park will have a full schedule for the summer concert series in downtown Colfax.
Pat Eggert, representing the Colfax Woman’s Club, spoke to the Colfax Village Board about Music in the Park during the public comments portion of the March 27 meeting.
Eggert had approached the village board last fall at the October meeting, seeking financial support from the board for the Music in the Park concert series held in Tower Park every summer.
The expenses for the 2022 concerts were $875.17, and income from selling popcorn, root beer floats and soda pop was $645.65, Eggert said at the October meeting.
The Colfax Woman’s Club had some sponsors, which for the 2022 concerts, included Woods Run Forest Products, the Colfax Commercial Club and the Colfax Messenger.
Musicians who perform in the park receive $75 to help cover their mileage expenses, no matter how large or small the group is, Eggert had told the village board.
The musicians typically have some ties to Colfax, and the 2022 concerts had at least 50 people each week, she said.
The Woman’s Club “passes the hat” during concerts to gather donations, but the Woman’s Club can only hold so many bake sales and also supports other projects, Eggert said.
At the October meeting, village board members expressed concern that if the village donated money to the Colfax Woman’s Club for Music in the Park, other groups also would approach the village board for donations.
In recent years, the Colfax Village Board has made a variety of donations to various organizations, including several $50 donations to the Colfax After Prom Party Committee; several donations of $50 to the Colfax Kiwanis Club to support the Colfax Twister Run; several $50 donations to the Red Cedar Sounds for their fall Harvest of Harmony show; $1,000 to the Colfax Fair Board for the fair fireworks (in 2019); $600 to $700 for Porta-potties for the Colfax Free Fair; and donations of $75 to support the Zor Tin Lizzies for their participation in the Colfax Firefighters’ Ball Parade, with the most recent Tin Lizzie donation being approved last September.
In spite of their previous donations to other groups, the village board declined to make a donation for Music in the Park and tabled the agenda item.
Sponsors
Eggert said she was happy to report at the March 27 meeting that the Colfax Woman’s Club had found enough sponsors for the 2023 Music in the Park concerts and would not need any help from the village board.
According to information Eggert provided to the village board, eleven musical groups have been scheduled for the summer Music in the Park in Colfax this year.
Concerts take place from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays in Tower Park in downtown Colfax next to the Colfax Municipal Building.
The rain location is the Colfax Fairgrounds on Railroad Avenue.
Members of the public should bring lawn chairs.
There is no charge to attend the concerts.
Refreshments will be available and the annual pie sale by the Colfax Municipal Building Restoration Group will be held at the concert on August 31.
