Agreement made for Community Center rent with Senior Citizen group

Over 20 people crowed into the City Council Chambers last Wednesday evening to take part in the discussion over the amount of rent the city is asking the Aging and Disability Resource Center of St. Croix County (ADRC) for the use of the Glenwood City Community Center.
The ADRC of St. Croix County is the group that operates the Nutrition program that serves noon meals four days a week from the Community Center.
The City Council had asked the group for a rent payment for use of the Center of $500 a month. During discussion of the matter, Council member Austin Sandow noted that the city is paying their cleaning service $400 monthly to clean the Community Center.
Tom Aebly, a Glenwood City resident and a member of the Senior Center Board addressed the Council and explained the effort they do to keep the center in tip top share and he also noted that sometimes they come on Monday morning to prepare for the noon meal and find that they have to clean up the center after it was rented over the weekend. Aebly also talked about the services they provide to more than 42 area families. He also discussed the other activities that are provided to the seniors at the center. “Bingo is very popular,” he said.
Council President Rob Unruh, and other members of the council made a point that they fully support the program, but that they are trying to support the financial end of the new Municipal Building.
Kristin Newton, who is the Administrator of ADRC, told the Council, “We want to be good partners, and those people coming to the center support your community.”
Newton’s information package stated, “Currently meals are catered by Bonnie’s Café in Glenwood City and then brought to the site for onsite dinning and packaging for home delivered meals. There continues to be a need and value to this program being located right in the community of Glenwood City,” Newton told the council.
Newton’s report indicated that meals provided so far this year amounted to over 2,000 meals at the site and some 3211 home delivered meals. The ADRC had made an offer to the Council of $250 a month rent.
Council President Unruh asked members of the council how they felt about the offer and four of the council members would accept that figure with two members suggesting that a figure of $350 a month rent would be a figure that they could accept.
And after some further discussion on the rent of the Community Center, Council member Steve Lee moved to accept the $250 figure for 2023 with a review of the matter after several months, that motion was seconded by council member Bill Ross, all members of the council voted to accept the $250 monthly figure.
