Boyceville school board approves field trips and personnel items, accepts donations

BOYCEVILLE — During a fairly brief meeting held Wednesday, September 28 in the middle school/high school IMC, the Boyceville board of education acted on personnel matters, accepted a trio of donations and approved several overnight and out-of-state field trip requests.
With just three of its five board members present, just enough for a quorum, Jeremy Mittlestadt chaired the meeting in the absence of president Tim Sempf. Member Erik Evenson was also unable to attend.
The board approved the hiring of professional staff members to fill vacant coaching and extracurricular supervisory roles in the district. Science teacher Russ Riehbrandt was approved as the new assistant coach for science olympiad as well as a supervisor for the weight room along with Jayden Beckley who is currently serving as a student teacher in the Phy Ed and Health department. Business education teacher Jacob Maes, with his years of experience as a professional photography, was tabbed as a co-advisor for the yearbook.
The resignation of Ivan Schlough as an evening custodian was also accepted.
A laundry list of overnight and out-of-state field trip requests for the upcoming year were given green lights.
Trips receiving board approval were: Feed My Starving Children submitted by Tim Engel to travel to Eagan, Minnesota sometime between December 15 and February 15, 2023 as part of a poverty unit in the sociology class; three science olympiad competitions submitted by coach Andy Hamm which would include a meet in Belleville, WI on November 11 and 12, a national competition in Solon, Ohio set for February 2-5, 2023 and the State Science Olympiad tournament slated for March 31 and April 1, 2023 at UW-Milwaukee; a request from Brian Roemhild for an end-of-the-year trip for the middle school to Valley Fair in May of 2023; high school wrestling tournaments in Wisconsin Dells on December 9-11, Merrill for January 6 and 7, 2023 and the state wrestling tournament in Madison running February 23 through the 26 submitted by coach Jamie Olson and athletic director Brian Roemhild; and finally the state track and field championships in La Crosse slated for June 2 and 3, 2023 submitted by coach Corey Day and athletic director Brian Roemhild.
Three grants award to the district and staff members were also officially accepted by the Board at the September 28 meeting.
The Menomonie Lions Club awarded $722.50 to the district which will be deposited into the Food Service Angel Fund which helps families with food needs.
Third grade teacher Angie Hellmann was awarded $250 by the UW-Eau Claire’s Teacher Education Program for a grant she wrote to help defray the cost of tickets and transportation for her class to attend the Mabel Tainter Theatre.
Finally, guidance counselor Gretchen Pederson was gifted $1,000 by the Community Foundation of Dunn County for the purchase of health and wellness materials.
In reports from the administration, high school/middle school principal Patrick Gretzlock told the board that the GED program, which offers students in the district’s “night-school” option the ability to pursue their high school diploma, currently has seven students enrolled. Gretzlock noted that the program requires that students enrolled in this option to attend classes a minimum of 90 percent of the time as well as take and pass exams.
Gretzlock also informed members on the new cell phone and electronic policy which prohibits student use of cell phones in classrooms from 8:04 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. He did say the student are permitted to use their phones during lunch. One positive that Gretzlock noted was that the policy seems to have increased student interaction with one another.
Finally, following a closed session, the board reconvened and approved an unpaid leave for a member of the professional staff.
The board’s next meeting will be Wednesday, October 12 when it holds its annual meeting and budget hearing.
