Experienced Colfax/Elk Mound boys’ golf team looks for more consistency on links

After a year under their collective belts, the Colfax/Elk Mound boys’ golf cooperative will begin its second season with much more experience when it hits the links for the 2022 campaign.
This year’s Colfax/Elk Mound squad, which did not have a senior on its roster a year ago when it finished third in the Dunn-St. Croix, welcomes back five letterwinners.
The lettermen’s list includes the team’s only senior Luke Blanchard and four sophomores – Jace Acker, Zane Brice, Matt Hanson and Riley Krall.
Joining that quintet and returning from last season are juniors Ty Meyer and Ethan Oas along with sophomores Connor Albricht, Christian Ebert and Lauren Horchem.
The team also has a pair of new additions, junior Kyle Irwin and its only freshman Aidan Schindler, that takes this year’s roster to an even dozen.
“We have more experience this year. Last year was the first varsity experience for all of our golfers,” said head coach Jordan Kongshaug who begins his second season in charge.
“Our kids have worked hard over the summer to improve their games. We will need to work to develop more consistency,” he added.
Kongshaug said last season the squad hovered around or above a score of 200 per nine-hole varsity event. The coach said his charges must lower their stroke totals if they are to improve their respective games and team placement in meets and tournaments.
“We are hoping to reduce that total to allow us to be more competitive as a team,” stated Kongshaug. “We want to work to get better each day so that we are playing our best golf at the end of the season.”
As for this year’s Dunn-St. Croix race, Kongshaug feels that it is a “pretty wide open” contest.
“Durand dominated the conference last season, but they also have to replace some graduates. They will still be solid,” concluded Kongshaug. “We are hoping to be competitive.”
Assisting Kongshaug once again this year is Ryan Krall.
