PARK FALLS — The Boyceville boys’ basketball team’s two plus hour drive to Park Falls for its WIAA Division 4 regional opener against host Chequamegon may have had some adverse effects.
Whether its was the long road trip or other factors at play, the Bulldogs got off to a slow start in last Tuesday’s regional quarterfinal contest, scoring just 12 points in the first half and trailing by 34-12 at halftime.
The Bulldogs, especially offensively, found some spark in the second half as they sunk five of their six three pointers and scored 29 points.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for the Bulldogs (#12) to overcome their early deficit as they lost 62-41 to the Screaming Eagles (#5) in the March 1 tournament contest.
Boyceville netted just four baskets – a three off the hands of Chase Hollister and two-point hoops by Simon Evenson, Nick Olson and Devin Halama – and three free throws in the first 18 minutes to trail by 22 points at the intermission.
The Bulldogs’ offense finally woke up in the second half hitting five three-point baskets including a pair by Halama to give him eight in the final half and ten points in all to lead the Bulldogs who nearly tripled their offensive output in the final 18 minutes of action.
Caden Wold, Olson and Evenson each had a triple in the final half. Olson finished with nine points, Wold seven (all of which came in the second half) and Evenson tallied six points. Grant Kaiser and Hollister each finished with three points, Jack Phillips had a pair and Mason Bowell added a free throw. Boyceville went 5-for-11 at the free throw line
Chequamegon had three players finish in double digits led by AJ Morgan who tallied 15 points in the Screaming Eagles 62-41 win. Isaiah Peitz scored a dozen points and Andrew Schienebeck finished with 11 for the Screaming Eagles. Chequamegon hit three triples and were 17-for-26 on foul shots.
Boyceville, who has no seniors, finished the season at 4-20.
