Still searching for the first conference win of the year, the Bulldogs boys’ basketball team would face a couple of tough opponents. Elk Mound and Elmwood/Plum City both sit near the top of the Dunn-St. Croix conference, and as such would be tough to beat.
Boyceville (0-13, 4-17) hosted Elk Mound on February 15 in hopes of securing that win. While they were able to hang tight in the first half, the Mounders would pull away in the second half for the 82-47 win.
They’d travel to Elmwood to face third-place Elmwood/Plum City on February 18. A slow start would doom them as they would only score 17 in the first half en route to a 62-43 Wolves win.
The Bulldogs will have one final chance to find that elusive first conference win on February 24 when they host rival Glenwood City to finish the regular season.
The Bulldogs traveled to Webster this past Monday, February 21 to play the Pirates in a non-conference tilt, results will be in next week’s edition.
The WIAA announced the Division 4 playoff pairings for the opening round of the tournament and the 12th seeded Bulldogs will travel to Park Falls on March 1 to face 5th seeded Chequamegon. Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m.
Elk Mound
Heading into the Elk Mound game Boyceville had been struggling to find their shot, however they did find some success early in the game. Two 3-pointers by Caden Wold and another by Simon Evenson would pace the way for 23 points in the first half. Wold and Evenson would lead their team in the first with eight and six points, respectively.
However, Elk Mound (7-6, 13-10) would knock down eight 3-pointers in the first half. That total would account for two-thirds of their first half output of 36 points to take a 13-point lead at intermission.
The second half would see a couple different players emerge as scoring threats for Boyceville. Mason Bowell would hit a 3-pointer on his way to eight in the half. Jack Phillips would also connect from deep as he added seven points in the second half.
Elk Mound would prove to be too tough offensively. They would connect on another eight 3-pointers in the second half on their way to scoring 46 in the final 18:00 as they cruised to the 82-47 win.
Evenson and Boswell lead all Bulldog scorers with ten points apiece.
Elmwood/Plum City
The Bulldogs would once again find themselves in an early hole against a tough Elmwood/Plum City squad. Wolves forward Luke Webb would prove to be one of the top players in the area as he would pour in 12 points in the first 18:00 minutes.
The Bulldogs countered with their own big-man; Grant Kaiser would put in six in the opening frame lead his team. However, that wouldn’t be enough firepower to keep it close as Elmwood/Plum City would jump out to a 30-17 lead at halftime.
As with the game against Elk Mound, Bowell would get hot in the second half and contribute ten. Yet, that wouldn’t be enough as the Wolves outscored the Bulldogs by six after halftime to hold on for a 62-43 victory.
Bowell once again led his team offensively, this night with 12 points. Nick Olson and Kaiser were close behind with eight apiece.
