Boyceville boys beat Lake Holcombe, fall to Mondovi

Though the Boyceville boys’ basketball team has yet to secure its first conference win, they have found success against non-conference foes. They would find a mixed bag on the week as they split a pair of games to put them at 0-7, 3-11 on the year.
The Bulldogs would once again find success against a non-conference opponent when they traveled to Lake Holcombe (5-9). Boyceville would jump out to an early lead and cruise to the 86-62 victory
However, the outcome would be different when they hosted Mondovi (2-5, 5-10). The Bulldogs fell behind early and ran out of steam as they lost 75-69.
The Bulldogs will have three opportunities in the coming days to notch that first conference win. They have road games against Durand on Tuesday, February 1 and Glenwood City on Monday, February 7. They host Spring Valley Friday, February 4. Tipoff for all games will be 7:15 p.m.
Lake Holcombe
Scoring would come early and often for the Bulldogs on this evening. Three-point buckets would be the key for Boyceville as they would hit seven on the evening.
The Bulldogs would hit four in the first half, with Caden Wold sinking two to start his night. Simon Evenson and Braden Roemhild also hit threes in the first half to push Boyceville out to a 43-29 lead. Evenson would pace the way in the first half with 13 points, including going 6-8 from the free throw line.
The Bulldogs would continue the hot shooting in the second half. Olson, Evenson, and Mason Bowell would connect from long range to keep Boyceville well in front of Lake Holcombe. To go along with his three pointer, Bowell would pour in 16 points in the second half to be the main contributor.
The offensive performance would allow the Bulldogs to cruise to a 86-62 victory on the evening to bring their record against foes outside the Dunn-St. Croix to 3-4.
Wold led three Bulldogs in double-digit scoring on the evening with 22 points. Bowell followed close behind with 20, while Evenson pitched in 18.
Mondovi
Facing the Buffaloes for the second time this season, the Bulldogs are looking to rebound from an early season 71-54 loss. This time they had the advantage of the home court and the momentum coming off a win at Lake Holcombe.
To start, things were looking good for Boyceville as they would jump out to an early 16-12 lead midway through the first half. Three pointers by Evenson and Olson, along with clutch free-throw shooting would be the key.
However, Mondovi would go on a 28-8 run to close out the first half to take the 40-24 lead at intermission. Mondovi would extend that lead and jump out to a 63-40 lead with 9:00 remaining in the game. However, the Bulldogs would not go quietly.
They would cut the Buffaloes advantage to only ten points with 4:30 remaining. Evenson and Wold each hit a three-pointer and Evenson added a free throw to get the Bulldogs to within 69-66 with about 1:30 to play but, the Buffaloes got the next six points to go ahead 75-66.
A three-point play by Nick Olson would cut the lead to six, but time would expire on a comeback and Mondovi would hold on for the 75-69 victory.
Olson led a quartet of Bulldog scorers in double-digits with 15. Wold, Evenson, and Bowell followed close behind with 13, 12, and 11 points respectively.
