A season that culminated in Boyceville (21-1) capturing the WIAA Division 4 State Baseball Championship June 28 in Appleton has brought individual honors and recognition to several Bulldog players.
The Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association (WBCA) released its all-state, all-district and all-academic teams last week following the conclusion of the high school baseball season and four Boyceville players have been selected to those various squads.
Topping the list were the Dunn-St. Croix’s Co-Most Valuable Players – seniors Trett Joles and Walker Retz. The duo was named to the all-state, all-district and all-academic teams.
Joles and Retz, who appeared in all 22 games for the Bulldogs, were both named to the second team all-state squad as a catcher and infielder, respectively.
Joles along with fellow senior Connor Sempf were named to the all-state academic team. To be named to the all-state academic team, recipients must be a junior or senior, receive first or second team all-conference recognition, have a GPA of 4.00 or higher and the head coach must be a member of the WBCA. Sempf and Joles were co-valedictorians of Boyceville’s Class of 2021 and first team All-DSC picks.
Elk Mound senior Nate Lew was also an all-state academic pick. Mondovi’s Tanner Marsh also made the all-state honorable mention squad as an outfielder.
All-District Selections
Joles and Retz were also tabbed as first-team members in the North West All-District selections. Again, Joles was named to the squad as a catcher and Retz as an infielder. Connor Sempf was named to the North West All-District second team as an infielder. Sempf shared duties with Retz at shortstop and was one of the Bulldogs’ top pitchers.
Joining Sempf and Joles on the All-North West academic team were Retz and junior Jacob Granley.
The Mounders also had a pair on that North West academic list – Lew and Evan Bohl. Lew was also an honorable mention pick for the all-district award.
Owen Washburn, a senior from Webster and first team all-state pick, was named as the Division 4 player of the year as well as North West District player of the year.
Dave Olson of Cumberland earned the state assistant coach of the year award.
WBCA All-Star Classic
Joles and Retz along with fellow Dunn-St. Croix player Tanner March were chosen to play for the West All-Stars in the annual WBCA All-Star Classic which was held July 9 and 10 at Oshkosh North High School.
Each team played three games – one each against the other three all-star teams (North, South and East).
