CAMERON — Competing on yet another hot day, the Colfax track and field teams qualified three boys and two girls along with a boy’s relay team for the state meet this week in LaCrosse.
The WIAA Division 3 sectional meet was held in Cameron June 17 with the temperature in the high 80s at starting time.
Sectional winners for the Viking girls were Molly Heidorn in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, and Jeanette Hydukovich in the discus throw. Thomas Drees won the shot put for the boys.
“I was very impressed overall with the team’s performance,” said Colfax head coach Kathleen Thorn. “This group has had to overcome some adversity with the changes to the season’s schedule, but they have never lost focus on what they’ve wanted to achieve.”
Sophomore Molly Heidorn easily won both the 1600 and 3200 meters runs. Heidorn finished the 1600 meters in 5:24.96, nearly eight second ahead of second-place Kristen Lawton of Flambeau and was 12 seconds faster than he nearest competitor in the 3200 meters where she finished with a time of 12:11.85.
Heidorn also qualified for the 800 meter run but did not compete. Thorn said that Molly chose not to run the 800 in order to focus on the two longer races that she won.
Freshman Jeanette Hydukovich continued to impress in the weight events. She threw the discus 110’ 11” to best the runner-up by over five feet.
Hydukovich was second in the shot put with her throw being less than an inch short of the winning mark set by Glenwood City senior Yasmin Mendez. Kennedy Shane finished seventh in the shot put (31’ 3.5”) and Jasmine Best was tenth in the 3200m run (13:13.08).
Junior Thomas Drees continued his season-long dominance in the shot put. He topped the field of 16 competitors at last Thursday’s sectional meet with a toss of 46’ 8.25” which was slightly more than two inches better than runner-up Chase Lussier, a senior from Cumberland.
Joining Drees at state for the boys will be senior Noah Heidorn who placed third in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:05.70, junior Nate Hydukovich was clocked at :53.24 in the 400 meter dash in fourth place, and the 4×400 meter relay team of Ryan Albricht, Heidorn, Hydukovich, and Max Knudson ran a 3:36.42 for a third-place finish.
Ashton Yarrington was 12th in the 1600 meter run (5:12.45), Max Knudson finished 11th in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles (:45.83), and Nick Jensen was 11th in the discus (120’ 5”).
The Colfax girls scored 40 points to finish eighth out of 30 teams with Ladysmith winning the sectional, and the boys had 27 points to finish tenth with Chetek-Weyerhaeuser taking top team honors.
The Division 3 state meet will get underway at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 24 at the Veterans Memorial Stadium at UW-LaCrosse.
