ELK MOUND – The Elk Mound Village Board held its first June meeting at 6 p.m. on June 7. The Board learned the results of the 2020 audit thanks to a report from Kim Shult of Baker Tilly. Shult explained the village had sufficient cash liquidity to cover 10 months of operating expenses. She also indicated the standard for most communities is to have three months of operating expenses in liquid funds. That seemed to indicate Elk Mound is managing its finances well.
Sheryl Claflin of CBS-Squared also presented a short report for the village, regarding potential water or sewer system upgrades and funding sources. She and engineer John Strand explained some repairs could occur in conjunction with street work around the village. This was mentioned specifically in reference to upgrading system pipes from 6 inches to 8, 10, or 12 inches.
Another suggestion from Strand and Claflin regarded adding a loop to the system to reduce or prevent stagnation, increase system reliability, and raise fire flow capabilities in case of emergency.
Strand and Claflin examined village streets, and determined many need repair, including one major thoroughfare, University Street.
Other streets noted on the map presented were Lincoln Ave., Taylor Street, and Railroad Street.
Tim Benjamin was appointed to the Board to fill the seat vacated by Paula Turner. Benjamin and his wife Karla live on N. Holly Ave. Several people were also appointed to the Village’s Zoning Appeals Board: Carol Peterson, Derek Donnelly, Joyce Price, Charlie Best, and Bob Buchanan. Buchanan was also appointed as the Zoning Appeals Board Chairman.
Several operator license applications received full Board approval after Police Chief Chad Weinberger indicated all associated background checks showed nothing of concern.
The Village Board voted to delay its first July meeting by one week out of consideration for the Independence Day holiday. The first meeting in July will be held at 6 p.m. on July 12.
The next Village Board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on June 21.
