The Boyceville softball team struggled to score runs in two of their three games played last week, losing 11-0 to Glenwood City May 24 and dropping a 9-0 contest to Colfax two days later. But, in between those games, they had a strong showing and defeated Elmwood/Plum City 8-4 on the road.
Boyceville, 4-6 and 7-9, has three of its final four games on the road which began yesterday with a contest in Spring Valley. The Bulldogs travel to Durand on Thursday and Mondovi on Friday before wrapping up the regular season with a home game agaisnt Elk Mound next Monday, June 7.
WIAA tournament play begins next Wednesday, June 9.
Glenwood City
The Bulldogs struggled at the plate and only picked up two hits in the game and the defense didn’t help much as they committed four errors.
They were behind just 1-0 after three innings, but the state-ranked Hilltoppers are the defending Dunn-St. Croix Conference champions and they are making a strong push to defend that title. Glenwood City tacked on three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and put the exclamation point on the game with five in the sixth.
Madison Andrews and Kady Grambo had the two hits for Boyceville while Ella Holden pitched the whole game, giving up just five hits, with one walk, and striking out six.
Elmwood/Plum City
At the start of the week, the Wolves were sitting at the top of the conference with Glenwood City, but a loss to Colfax the day before this game dropped them out of first. They dropped even further after the Bulldogs slammed 11 hits in Elmwood and swiped eight bases in the win.
Boyceville fell behind 3-0 but in the top of the fourth they busted loose for seven runs and tacked on another for good measure while giving up just one more to the Wolves.
Four Bulldogs all had a pair of hits including Andrews, Hannah Dunn, Olivia Ponath, and Hailey Hellendrung. Dunn and Ponath both stole two bases while Hellendrung knocked in three runs, and Grambow had two RBIs.
Holden used her golden arm to pitch another complete game, striking out nine Wolves and giving up only five hits.
Colfax
The game was moved up a day earlier to Wednesday due to the chance of bad weather on Thursday.
After playing one of their best games of the year against E/PC, the Bulldogs fell flat and managed to get only five hits against the Vikings. Bygd had three of those hits, all singles and Holden had a pair of singles herself.
Colfax led 3-0 after a half an inning of play and it remained at that score until the fifth when the Vikings scored five times, then tacked on their final run in the sixth for the 9-0 victory.
Holden threw all seven innings, giving up 11 hits with four walks and six strikeouts.
