The Lady Bulldogs managed to get two of their three scheduled softball games in last week and started with a Monday afternoon 5-4 loss to Mondovi.
They recovered quite well by trouncing Unity 12-2 three days later, but had a Friday game at Durand postponed.
Accounting for the latest two contest, Boyceville is 3-4 in conference play and 6-7 overall with two of its three games this week at home. The Bulldogs hosted rival Glenwood City Monday before they headed to Elmwood the next day to play the Wolves of E/PC. The Toppers and Wolves are currently tied atop the conference standings. Boyceville returns to TCE to host Colfax on Thursday, May 27 before taking a brief Memorial Day Holiday break until next Tuesday, June 1 when they go to Spring Valley.
Mondovi
The first six innings didn’t play out very well for Boyceville as they committed five errors in the field and were held scoreless on the offensive end.
After falling behind 5-0, they got their wake-up call in the seventh inning when Hannah Dunn, Libby Bygd, and Kady Grambo all drew walks, and Olivia Ponath drove two of them in with a double. Harper Olson brought another run in on a Buffalo error and with two outs, Jadynn Traxler singled to bring the fourth run in. Boyceville coach Jamie Olson decided to send another runner home on the play in hopes of tying the game up, but the Mondovi center fielder came up with the ball and gunned it home to nail the runner for the final out.
Boyceville drew ten walks off Mondovi hurler Abby Olson but collected just five hits and struck out eight times.
Kady Grambow was the only Bulldog with more than one hit, going 2-for-3, with two stolen bases and scoring one run. Ella Holden, Ponath, and Traxler all picked up one hit with Ponath driving in two runs, and Traxler bringing one runner home while Harper Olson also had one RBI.
Holden threw a strong game, allowing just three hits with seven K’s and three free passes, but errors, as they usually do, played a big part in the loss.
Unity
The Bulldogs took a quick 2-0 lead in the first at Unity’s home field when Dunn and Madison Andrews banged hits and came home on Bygd’s double.
It was 2-2 at the end of four innings but the Bulldogs came up with three runs in the fifth when Dunn, Andrews and Bygd all came home, and they broke the game open with seven runs in the sixth. Traxler, Dunn, Andrews and Holden all had extra-base hits in the inning with Holden’s being a round tripper.
Dunn had a pretty good night at the plate, going 4-for-4, scoring three times and bringing in two runs. Bygd was the RBI leader, slamming a pair of hits including a homer and bringing seven runners home, while Mya Lagerstrom smacked a triple and collected two RBIs. Andrews batted 2-for-3 with three runs scored, and Holden finished with two RBIs.
Holden gave up just two hits with four strikeouts and no free passes to earn the victory.
