After not playing a game since December 3 due to a problem with COVID-19, the Elk Mound girls basketball squad traveled to Altoona to take on the Rails December 29. Although they held a four-point lead at halftime, the Mounders let the lead slip away in the second half and lost 48-40.
Brooke Emery hit three of her four treys of the game in the first half while Olivia Schreiber scored eight points to help Elk Mound take a 23-19 advantage into the break.
The Rails began pulling away midway through the second half and were up 42-36 with just over a minute left before Schreiber knocked down a free throw. Tori Blaskowski drained a triple for the Mounders to get them to a five-point deficit again, down 45-40, but the Rails finished the game off at the free throw line after Elk Mound committed their tenth team foul.
Schreiber finished with 14 points for the Mounders, including six-of-10 from the foul stripe while Emery added 12 points, all by way of the long ball. The Mounders were eight-for-15 in free throws while the Rails knocked down 11-of -22. Averie Varsho had a game high 17 points to lead the Rails.
“It was good to get back on the court,” Mounders’ coach Jordan Kongshaug said. “We battled hard but came up a bit short at the end. We are looking forward to the second half of the season,” he added.
When they do start the second half of the season, it will be in conference play. The Mounders, with a 1-3 record, hosted Glenwood City January 5 and will then play road games at Durand on Thursday, January 7 and in Plum City on Saturday, January 9 against the Wolves of Elmwood/Plum City. Elk Mound will then return to its home court next Tuesday, January 12 to host the Bulldog of Boyceville.
