BOYCEVILLE — The Lady Bulldogs started the basketball season with a win as they defeated the Cornell Cheifs, 36-18, at home on Tuesday, December 1st. It wasn’t a pretty game and it looked a bit rough and sloppy as both teams were adjusting to the new season.
Boyceville senior Jensine Boesl led the team in scoring with 19 points, eight of which came in first half. The Lady Dawgs split their scoring evenly with 18 points in the first half and 18 in the second half. Freshman Rachael Montgomery was second in points with six for the evening.
New head coach Jay Lagerstrom agreed that it was a rough game, “but that was to be expected with the first game.”
He was proud of the way his team played, “I thought the girls hustled and played hard we just need to clean things up on both ends of the court.”
Offensively, Lagerstrom stated that they settled for okay shots. He felt that if they had passed just one more time that they would have had better looks. He credited Boesl and Montgomery for playing well at the post position but conceded that they probably should have taken more advantage of them down on the blocks.
Defensively, Lagerstrom felt that they should have moved their feet better as they got into some foul trouble. He also praised some of his younger players for coming in and playing well in their first varsity experience. He concluded that he was happy for the girls to get the opportunity to play and get a win.
Isabelle Clark scored 15 of the Chiefs 18 points.
