BOYCEVILLE —For the sixth time in the seven-year history of the award, a Boyceville wrestler has been named as the Dunn-St. Croix Conference’s “Wrestler of the Year”.
Junior Trett Joles was the unanimous choice for the 2019-20 D-SC Wrestler of the Year honor.
He joins five other Boyceville Bulldogs as the recipient of the award which included last year’s winner Brock Schlough, older brother Garrett Joles (2017-18), James Palmer (2016-17), Austin Wolfe (2014-15) and Micha Johnson (2013-14). Spring Valley/Elmwood’s Ethan Hofacker was the 2015-16 honoree.
“Trett is very deserving of this award,” said his head coach Jamie Olson. “He has many qualities that make him who he is, but I think what makes him stand out from others is attention to detail”.
Trett Joles’ capped the 2019-20 season by winning his second straight WIAA Division 3, 182-pound state championship on Saturday, February 29 in Madison’s Kohl Center.
During his run to a consecutive state title, Joles compiled an 46-1 mark which included a pair of second period falls and a major decision in his three state matches this past February. Joles stuck Blair-Taylor’s Logan Shramek in 3:51 to win his second state gold medal.
During the season, Joles compiled an impressive list of statistics including 133 takedowns, 100 near falls, 30 pins and 341 team points which tied the school record.
Trett is just one of four Bulldogs to win at least two state titles. The others include his brother Garrett, Brock Schlough and Chris Wisemiller.
“We all know Trett is a very gifted wrestler; strong, flexible and explosive,” stated Olson. “What separates Trett and makes him a top-three ranked, 182-pound junior in the country is how he goes about analyzing his technique, diet and training every day.”
What’s even more impressive is that Trett Joles has not only excelled on the wrestling mat but in the classroom. He has a achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average in his studies at Boyceville High School.
“He really is a perfectionist when it comes to school and wrestling and sometimes I would say he is too hard on himself at times,” noted Olson. “He is truly a student of the sport and as a coach it’s fun to watch him go about chasing his goals and dreams.”
For Joles, who has a 143-3 career record through three varsity season, one of those goals will be to win a third state title. A dream that Trett Joles will chase with passion and unrelenting determination and focus.
