COLFAX — It wasn’t the strongest of weeks for the Colfax boys’ basketball team as they went 0-2 with games against Turtle Lake and Mondovi, both of which were hosted by the Vikings.
The Vikings kicked off their week with a game against the Lakers of Turtle Lake and ran head first into a team that was able to get off shots with little to no defense from Colfax. The Vikings found themselves nine points away from a lead in the first half, but could not bounce back in the second, losing by 21 points – 50-71.
Thursday evening, February 13, was another tough go round for Colfax as they kept a one-point lead in the opening 18 minutes of the contest. But visiting Mondovi stampeded Colfax in the second half as the Buffaloes proved to be too much for the Vikings. Mondovi forced turnovers and coupled with Colfax’s bad passing, the result was costly 55-47 loss for the Vikings, which knocked them out of a first-place tie with Durand.
Colfax is now tied with Elk Mound and Spring Valley with 8-3 conference records. Overall, the Vikes are 11-8.
Colfax was on the road last evening, Tuesday, February 18 to take on first-place Durand and will travel to Boyceville on Friday, February 21. The Vikings will host Spring Valley in the regular-season finale next Thursday, February 27.
Turtle Lake
Monday night, February 10, was a tough one for the Colfax boys’ basketball team as they took a hard hit from Lakeland-Central’s Turtle Lake, 50-71.
“We did our best job of the year as far as taking care of the ball,” said head coach Garrett Maas. “We ran into a good team that had a really good shooting night.”
Leading the Vikings on the floor was senior Ed Hydukovich with 16 points. Hydukovich went down low into the paint for eight doubles.
Drew Gibson and Cole Seehaver had a rather quiet evening as they put up 12 points between them. Gibson hit a pair of threes and a double, and Seehaver had two doubles.
“I was disappointed that we quit working the ball inside which allowed us to get back into the game,” said coach Maas. “Their dribble penetration hurt us in the second half and it allowed them to get a few too many good looks from the three.”
The game was close heading into halftime, 27-36, but it wouldn’t last long as Turtle Lake outscored Colfax by 12 in the second half, 35-23.
Noah Heidorn and Zach Rindy put up seven points a piece for the Vikings, Heidorn and Rindy hit two doubles and a triple.
Also scoring for Colfax were Hunter Rebak with a double and was two-for-three from the line, and Noah Albricht and Tyler Hallquist each with a lone double.

Mondovi

Colfax had a tough time against the Mondovi Buffaloes on Thursday, February 13, as the Vikings dropped the ball game by a score of 47-55.
Cole Seehaver gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead with 16:21 left to go, but Jarod Falkner answered back two minutes later with a drive inside for two.
It was back and forth between Colfax and Mondovi as the lead exchanged hands five separate times before Zach Rindy would push the Vikings ahead by one with a minute left at 22-21. The Vikings held on to take that same score into the locker room.
Rindy led Colfax on the court with 12 points stemming from six doubles.
Colfax struggled for much of the first half to put the ball through the hoop, as a tough Mondovi defense kept a full-court press on the Vikes throughout the first half.
The Vikings defense allowed Mondovi’s Owen Schultz to get around it and to the hoop for 12 of his 26 points in the first half.
Schultz was also first to score for Mondovi in the opening minutes of the second half, but Ed Hydukovich would put up a quick two to reclaim the lead at 23-24.
Hydukovich had ten points for the Vikings with four doubles and he was two-for-two from the free throw line.
But it wouldn’t be long before Mondovi reclaimed the lead and widen the gap thanks to a trey by Evan Gray.
Senior Cole Seehaver and junior Drew Gibson attempted to help out the Vikings as they were able to put up a three triples in the second half, but Mondovi took notice of the pair and began to double team them.
Colfax called its first time out with 10 minutes remaining and down by five, 29-34, but could not pull together to work as a team and found themselves with an eight-point deficit as the game clock expired.
Also scoring for the Vikings were Noah Heidorn with three doubles and Noah Albricht with a lone trey.
