BOYCEVILLE — It was a tough week for the Lady Bulldogs as they dropped two basketball games this past week.
The first loss was to another pack of Bulldogs from Chetek-Weyerhauser last Tuesday, February 4th, where Boyceville lost 36-46 in Chetek. Then on Thursday, February 6th, Boyceville lost a close conference contest to the second-place Durand Panthers at home by a score of 49-50.
With just four regular season games left to play, three of which are at home, the season is winding down for Boyceville. The Bulldogs took on Spring Valley on Tuesday, February 11th on the road and will kick-off a three-game home stand by hosting the Colfax Vikings this Friday, February 14th in the annual “Coaches vs. Cancer” game.
Boyceville will then welcome Amery for a non-conference contest next Monday, February 17 before wrapping up its conference and regular-season slates at home against Elk Mound on Thursday, February 20.
Chetek-Weyerhauser
“We just didn’t show up to play the game,” lamented Bulldogs’ head coach Jolene Bird following a 10-point road loss to Chetek-Weyerhaeuser February 4th.
“We’d been off a week and it showed. We had very little enthusiasm and effort by anybody, just was a poor night coaching and playing, the whole ball of wax.”
Despite this, the Bulldogs were only down by one at the half with the score 17-18.
It was the second half where the real problems started.
Bird remarked, “We got down and we just couldn’t seem to battle back with anything we did. I think we really hurt ourselves.”
She admitted that it wasn’t a good coaching night either and she took 50% of the blame, “and I told them they had to divide the other 50% nine ways.”
Chetek-Weyerhauser outscored the Lady Dawgs 28-19 in the second half.
Emma Ouellette led the Bulldogs with 11 points for the evening.

Durand
“I’m really proud of the girls right now,” commented Coach Bird after the home game against Durand last Thursday.
“We’re short of numbers and they battled super hard,” added Bird.
Due to illness and injury, the Bulldogs only played six players the entire night in their one-point loss to the Durand Panthers in what was one of their better games of the season.
As the game got underway, the Bulldogs scored off the opening play when Kady Grambow knocked in two points after driving the base line.
The scoring was a little slow after that as both teams missed shots trying to find their rhythm.
The Panthers were also pressing the entire first half but really the Bulldogs didn’t have a problem beating it.
It was a closely contested half with the Bulldogs taking the early lead. With 8:30 on the clock, Megan Hintzman sank a base line jumper to give the Lady Dawgs a 12-9 lead.
As play continued, so did the battle.
The Panthers started creeping their way back and pulled to within one (15-16) at just past the seven-minute mark of the opening half.
Emma Ouellette then drove in two and Jensine Boesl added one from the line to increase their lead to three (19-15). The Bulldogs then missed a golden opportunity in the next minute or so when they came up short at the line going 0-for-4 while the Panthers added two more.
With just over three minutes left to play in the half, Boesl grabbed her own rebound for two which the Panthers immediately countered with one from outside the arc. Grambow then hit the front half of her one-and-one bonus before the Panthers put up five unanswered points to take a 25-22 lead. Hintzman then connected on both ends of a double bonus which the Panthers countered with a bucket and one from the line to take a 28-24 lead.
With about three seconds left in the half, Ana Evenson was able to sink a bucket for two. The Bulldogs headed to the locker room just two points behind the Panthers, 26-28.
After scoring first in the second half, the Panthers went quiet while the Bulldogs went on an 11-point run to take a 37-30 lead.
Then with the half just about half over and the Bulldogs leading 41-33, the Panthers channeled their inner wildcat and went on a 13-point run to take the lead at 46-41. The Dawgs then added four points to pull to within one before the Panthers added two more.
Now with the Panthers leading 48-45, they took a timeout at the 3:02 mark. After the timeout, Durand came out trying to stall, forcing the Bulldogs to foul. Fortunately, the Panthers missed their bonus shot and about twenty seconds later Grambow hit a short base line jumper for two with a minute thirty on the clock.
Again the Dawgs were forced to foul and again the Panthers missed their bonus shot. With under a minute left, Evenson hit for two under the basket to give the Dawgs the lead back at 49-48.
Less than twenty seconds later, the Panthers were once again at the free throw line where, unfortunately, they found success to take a 50-49 lead.
With just over twenty seconds left in the game the Bulldogs took a timeout to plan their final play of the game. However, with about four seconds left on the clock the Lady Dawgs got a little panicky and took a bad shot and missed, thus ending the game.
Bird continued her critic of the game saying, “We changed some stuff on defense and without [McKenna] Hurlburt [she’s injured] for them it evened the playing field for us a little size wise. Other than free throw shooting there wasn’t much that I thought we faltered at, we missed a couple of easy buckets early on and had a couple of turnovers at crucial times but I thought it was one of the better games that we have played recently.”
The Lady Dawgs were led by Kady Grambow and Megan Hintzman who each had 12 points. The Panthers are currently in second place in the Dunn-St. Croix conference with a record of 9-2, 12-6 overall. The Bulldogs are currently 6-12 overall and 3-8 in conference play.
