BOYCEVILLE — The Lady Bulldogs hosted the state-ranked Warriors of Clear Lake in a girls’ non-conference basketball contest last Monday, January 27th. Unfortunately, the Warriors’ size and talents were too much for the Lady Dawgs and they lost 36-66.
The Bulldogs had a busy week leading up to this game with games the previous Thursday, Friday, a youth tournament on Saturday that they worked at and then practice on Sunday. Boyceville knew that coming up against the second ranked team in Division Five would be a challenge for them with or without their recent busy schedule.
According to head Bulldog coach Jolene Bird, the Lady Bulldogs held their own during the first half. Stating that portions of it were just fine and others they hurt themselves with some of the things they did. By the end of the half the Warriors held a 32-18 lead.
Bird went on to say that, “They’re a good basketball team (Clear Lake) and we were out-sized significantly.”
The Warriors have two girls listed at six foot, one at 5’10” and two at 5’9”.
“We didn’t have enough man power to go at it,” added Bird.
Another factor that didn’t help the Bulldogs is that although she did return to the game on Friday, senior Tyra Kostman is out with a concussion for an indefinite amount of time. Bird said that losing her really hurt them because she is such a motivational factor on the court. She adds a spark to the team.
The Bulldogs were outscored 18-34 in the second half with the final score: Bulldogs 36, Warriors 66
The Warriors who are currently 15-0 overall, sit on top of the Lakeland Central conference with a 7-0 record.
Emma Ouellette led the Bulldogs with nine points while Mya Lagerstrom chipped in seven. Madison Zimmer was the Warrior leading scorer with 16 points.
The Lady Dawgs played in a non-conference game on Tuesday, February 4th against the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser Bulldogs and will host the Durand Panthers in a conference game on Thursday, February 6th. Boyceville will travel to Spring Valley next Tuesday, February 11.
