ELK MOUND – Elk Mound will host the Dunn-St. Croix Honors Project this week. Top musicians from nine area schools will present a concert on Saturday, February 1 at 1:30 pm in the Elk Mound HS Gym. This will be a top-quality concert; and is usually further away so we hope many community members take the time to attend the concert when it is local.
In 1979 the idea to bring together the finest musicians of the Dunn-St. Croix Conference to form the Honors Choir and Honors Band became a reality. Since the beginning, the philosophy was to have students from different schools work together toward a common goal of cooperation and excellence, rather than only competing against each other.
Members of the honors groups are chosen based on student’s achievements through their involvement in musical activities and their director’s recommendations. Each of the schools in the DSC takes a turn as host school for the festival.
The Honors Project has had the privilege of having a guest conductor work with one of the groups, alternating between band and choir every other year. This year, Erika Svanoe, a highly sought-after composer and conductor will be conducting the band. Conference music teachers will be conducting and accompanying the choir.
After learning the music at their own respective schools, students gather for combined rehearsals on Wednesday, January 29; and Saturday morning, February 1. They will give a concert at 1:30 pm in Elk Mound High School on Satudray, February 1.
