BOYCEVILLE — The Lady Bulldogs’ basketball team played two games at home this past week with mixed results.
On Tuesday, January 7, the Panthers from Prairie Farm came to town and left with a 64-43 victory. Two days later, on Thursday, January 9, the Spring Valley Cardinals flew in for a conference game which the Lady Dawgs won by a score of 56-33.
With the split, the Lady Bulldogs now have an overall record of 3-6 and a conference record of 1-4.
Boyceville played at Colfax last evening, Tuesday, January 14, and will continue on the road when they face the Mounders in Elk Mound this Friday, January 17 and Mondovi next Monday, January 20.
Prairie Farm
“They’re a young, athletic bunch. They’re ranked ninth is the state for a reason,” were head Bulldog Coach Jolene Bird’s comments after their non-conference loss to Prairie Farm January 7.
Bird went on to describe the Panthers as long and quick. She said that they played a solid 1-3-1 against her squad which in part caused the Bulldogs to turn the ball over 34 times. Bird said probably 20 of those were unforced as she credited the Panthers for putting them in a panic mode.
In the first half, the Lady Dawgs were “in it” until about two minutes left when the Panthers went on a 10-2 run. The Bulldogs went to the locker room trailing 19-31.
It was a similar situation in the second half.
With nine minutes to go, the Bulldogs were only down by seven when the Panthers went on another run and thus put the game out of reach for the Bulldogs. The Panthers outscored the Lady Dawgs, 33-24, in the second half.
Tyra Kostman was the leading scorer for the Bulldogs with 13 points. Kady Grambow was right behind her with 12. The Panthers had four players in double digits with Makaylin Christenson leading the way with 18 points. Prairie Farm is 8-1 overall with a 4-1 record in the Lakeland Central conference, trailing second-ranked Clear Lake by a game.
Bird concluded her comments by complimenting the Panthers saying “hats off to Prairie Farm, they’re a nice team, they’re going to do some good things.”

Spring Valley
Missed shots and turnovers from both teams is how the Bulldog’s second game of the week got started against the Cardinals of Spring Valley on Thursday, January 9.
Almost three and a half minutes passed before either team sank a bucket and got on the scoreboard.
For the hometown fans, it was Kady Grambow who first scored, sinking the first of her four, three pointers in the game. About thirty seconds later it was Megan Hintzman hitting two free throws to give the Bulldogs an early 5-0 lead. A lead which they never gave up.
The Cardinals pulled to within two points of the Bulldgos at 4-6 before the Lady Dawgs went on a 15-point run that included long balls from Grambow, Mya Lagerstrom, and Emma Ouellette, with additional buckets from Ana Evenson, Naomi Hillman and Jensine Boesl.
With the Bulldogs now leading 21-4, the Cardinals finally put up four more points before Boesl put up two for the Bulldogs off a nice assist from Hillman.
Now with about five minutes left in the half, it seemed as half the scoring opportunities came from the free throw line in a game where the refs were a bit foul happy. Both teams had 10 or more fouls in both halves of this competition.
As the first half ran down, the Bulldogs added three points from the floor and three from the line. The Cards as well split their scoring with five from the floor and five from the line. Heading into the locker room the Lady Dawgs had a 30-18 lead.
The second half was a fast half with a lot of hustle. However, at times it got a bit sloppy and rough.
For most of the first part of the second half, the Cards and Bulldogs traded points, one exception was at the 14:42 mark where Evenson scored two points off an inbound play which she immediately followed up with a bucket from outside the arc after the Cardinals had turned over the ball.
About half way through the second half, the Bulldogs switched up their defense and it cut down on some of the aggressive sloppiness.
With Boyceville leading 48-28 and Spring Valley pressing, the Bulldogs beat the press with a deep throw to the other end of the court. The first time they did it, Lagerstrom was the recipient of the pass. She sank her basket as well as getting fouled in the process. She was successful in sinking her bonus shot as well.
After the Cards failed to score on their next procession it was again a long pass, this time to Hintzman, with similar results having been fouled on her way to sinking a basket. Unfortunately, Hintzman failed to sink her free throw.
As in the first half, a lot of the action was at the free throw line at the end of the half. The end being the last seven plus minutes. Other than two points from each team from the floor what little scoring there was was from the free throw line.
The Cardinals were 3-for-5 from the line while the Bulldogs were only 1-for-6 at charity stripe. Free throws are something that the Lady Dawgs have struggled with this week. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, they didn’t need the extra points and easily defeated the Carfinals 56-33.
“Any time you get a win it’s good,” commented Coach Bird after the game. She went on to say that, “Our kids have been in some ball games and lost some close ones, so it was good night for us to come out with a win.”
She did admit there are things they need to work on which include better rebounding, fewer turnovers and better shooting at the free throw line.
Kady Grambow led the Buldogs with 12 points followed by Mya Lagerstrom with 11 while Ana Evenson and Emma Ouellette each dropped in nine.
