HAMMOND — The Bloomer/Colfax Raptors were well aware of what they were getting into before they ever made the trip to St. Croix Falls.
The Saints, a Division 3 state team qualifier last season and currently ranked fifth in the WIWrestling.com’s online coaches poll, manhandled the Raptors, winning the January 9th dual, 69-9.
“Many of our kids just seemed to quit when they were down and that’s why the score ended up the way it did,” said assistant coach Adam Davison. “It’s something we need to improve on, not only for our team duals the rest of the season but also just to be tougher.”
The Raptors won only two matches in Thursday evening’s competition in the 132-lb. and 160-lb. weight classes.
Sawyer Best, currently ranked sixth in the state, won his match against Sam Glenna via pin fall in the 132-lb. weight class.
“Sawyer won his match by fall and was dominant once again,” Davison explained. “Continuing to show why he’s ranked sixth in the state.”
The only other match won was by Bloomer’s Bowen Rothbauer against Bennett Bergmann. Rothbauer won by decision, 3-1, after an escape in the second period and earning a take down with 15 seconds left in the period.
Colfax’s Colin Bohl and Brison Tuschl lost their matches in the 106-lb. and 182-lb. weight classes.
During the exhibition rounds Hope Lahaie competed in the 145-lb. weight class and was pinned at 1:32 by Saint’s wrestler Matty Dreger.
“We knew things probably weren’t going to go well for us on the mat. But the most frustrating was the lack of fight out of many of our kids, especially when they got put on their backs,” Davison stated.
The Bloomer/Colfax Raptors will return to the mat this Thursday, January 16, on the road against Ladysmith. B/C will return to Ladysmith on Saturday, January 18, for the Ladysmith Invitational.
