It was a full week for the Glenwood City boys’ basketball team with games on Monday, December 9, Thursday, December 12 and Friday, December 13.
Unfortunately, the Hilltoppers have yet to find the big ‘W’ as they added three check marks to the loss column as they fell by hefty margins to Cadott, Durand and Prescott.
Glenwood City fell to 0-4 overall with the latest setbacks and are 0-1 in Dunn-St. Croix conference play.
Toppers’ head coach Tristan Kittilson is looking to put a great week of practice in and have the boys ready to host rival Boyceville Friday night, December 20 for Parents’ Night. The boys will also host a non-conference game with Ellsworth on Friday, December 27 at 7:00 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the girls who face Osceola at 5:30 p.m.
Cadott
According to head coach Tristan Kittilson, it was another tough game for the Topper boys when they traveled to play the Cadott Hornets on Monday, December 9.
“We started off stronger, but fell back into some early season bad habits and found ourselves in a tough spot by halftime,” stated Kittilson.
With about nine minutes left in the first half, starter Gavin Janson had to exit the game and was unable to return for the remainder of the game. This was a big loss for the Hilltoppers. By the end of the first half the Toppers found themselves trailing the Hornets by 30 points, 22-52.
The results of the second half were better with Glenwood City scoring 17 points to the Hornets 25. However, the damage had been done and the end result was the Hornets winning by the score of 77-39.
Ethan Hanson paced the Toppers with eight points. Brandyn Hallquist chipped in for seven points and Gavin Janson netted six before leaving the game in the first half with an injury.
Even with this tough loss, Coach Kittilson is staying positive.
“We had some really bright spots and moments throughout the game and I was proud of our effort and attitude from start to finish,” said Kittilson.
The coach also praised the play of Drew Olson stating, “He played a better game scoring a team high 10 points, and running the point guard position.”
Kittilson also commended sophomore Justin Moe who saw a lot of action in the second half due to the injury to Janson. He remarked that Moe did some really nice things and showed great heart!

Durand
The Hilltoppers took on the Durand Panthers in their home and Dunn-St. Croix opener on Thursday, December 12. Unfortunately, the Toppers got off to a sluggish start and soon found themselves behind.
According to Kittilson, the Panthers played very well and very hard.
“We showed a lot of fight and continued to battle making some progress before first half [ended],” commented Kittilson.
By the end of the first half, the Panthers had a commanding 31-9 lead.
Kittilson remarked that the Toppers played much better in the second half and his boys showed him some positive things. Unfortunately, it was too little, too late and the Toppers couldn’t dig themselves out of the hole that they had dug for themselves in the first half.
The second half had the Toppers scoring 22 to the Panthers 32 with the final score Hilltoppers 31, Panthers 63.
Brady McCarthy got his first start of the season replacing the injured Gavin Janson and Cole Logghe made his first start as well.

Prescott
Friday, December 13 proved to be unlucky for the Toppers who traveled to Prescott to face the Cardinals, ranked fourth in Division 3 according to the first state coaches poll of the year.
Glenwood City’s offense was as cold as the outdoors in the first half, netting just ten points in the first 18 minutes of play. Prescott, meanwhile, had its potent offense in high gear throwing down 54 points by halftime.
The Cardinals, in a game that was originally scheduled for December 2. They were clearly outmatched and the Hilltoppers went on to post a 50-point victory with a 84-34 final score.
