Eagles Soar above Bulldogs boys to take the win

ALMA — In their second game of the season, the Bulldog boys’ basketball team traveled to Alma for a non-conference match against the Pepin/Alma Eagles on Tuesday, December 3.
Although the Bulldogs fared better than its season-opening loss to Chetek-Weyerhaeuser, they were still on the losing end of a 29-51 score.
According to head coach Colby Dotseth, the Bulldogs struggled throughout the first half with turnovers. He also conceded that his players’ effort on the glass was poor and they gave the Eagles too many second-shot opportunities off of offensive rebounds. Dotseth also stated that the Eagles took advantage of several of Bulldogs’ turnovers and turned them into transition layups.
At the end of the first half the Eagles had a commanding 28-13 lead.
On the plus side, Dotseth felt that Boyceville’s defensive effort was much better in the second half. The Bulldogs pressured the ball handlers and played more under control offensively.
Overall, Dotseth lamented that they had a poor night shooting, “We had many great looks from the outside that just didn’t go in for us and we got to the rim really well, we just didn’t finish well.”
The Eagles outscored the Bulldogs 28-23 in the second half.
As a team, Dotseth sees improvement from their first game on both ends of the court.
He went on to say that his squad was more aggressive and did a better job getting to the free throw line. He hopes that the players will continue to improve on getting to the free throw line and that they can limit their turnovers.
Dotseth praised the play of Brendan Sempf saying that he was more aggressive with the basketball and it showed as he led the Bulldogs with 10 points
Dotseth also pointed out the play of Logan Knudtson saying he was also aggressive and got to the rim but he couldn’t get his buckets to fall.
Connor Larson was another player that stuck out for Dotseth. He remarked that Larson came off the bench and played well on both ends of the court.
Dotseth is looking for his team to continue to improve and be a more physical presence on the court.
The Bulldogs played their home opener on Tuesday, December 10 when they hosted Cumberland. Boyceville will be home again on Thursday, December 12 for the Dunn-St. Croix conference opener against Elmwood/Plum City. The Bulldogs will be back on the road next Tuesday when they travel south to Mondovi.
