Colfax girls’ basketball suffers overtime loss against Hudson

HUDSON — The Colfax ladies were in Hudson last Tuesday night, November 19, to open the 2019-20 basketball season.
The talented Vikings, defending champs of the Dunn-St. Croix, pushed the Raiders, a division one team and last year’s Big Rivers Conference runners-up, to the breaking point only to fall in overtime, 54-51, in what Colfax’s veteran head coach Joe Doucette described as a tough one to lose.
“We had a few chances to win late and we needed to get the ball inbound or make some free throws,” Doucette stated. “But that is why we are playing a tough schedule and teams like Hudson is to be challenged and have to fight for everything.”
Rachel Scharlau and Taylor Irwin took the offensive lead for the Lady Vikes, who received scoring contributions from ten players in total, as they each tallied 12 points in the game. Scharlau hit a shot from outside the arc for three and had two field goals coupled with five points from the line. Irwin hit two field goals, a pair of threes, and was two-for-two in free throws.
“Rachel battled their big girl all night and Taylor had a great game off the bench,” Doucette said.
Sophia Jonas of Hudson wrecked havoc on Colfax in the first half as she put in 13 of her game-leading 24 points to help the Raiders to a 26-19 advantage at halftime. Jonas, who had three treys in the first half and another in OT, also scored seven of Hudson’s 11 overtime points.
“Early we looked rushed and settled for a lot of quick threes, we were much better offensively in the second half,” Doucette explained.
Taylor Irwin scored five of Colfax’ eight points in overtime including one of her two threes while Jayna Bowe sank a triple for the Vikes only other OT score. Josie Steinke made a pair of treys in regulation play.
Colfax outscored Hudson 24-17 in the second half to force the extra 4-minute frame.
Working the free throw line for the Vikings was Kameri Meredith with three, Morgan Schleusner with 2, and Addisyn Olson had one. Meredith also made two inside shots to finish with seven points.
“Their size made us miss a lot of inside shots, but we were persistent and found ways to hang in there,” Doucette commented. “We can learn a lot in a game like this, we were a play or a free throw away from a big win.”
Also scoring for Colfax were Saville Wilson and Marissa Harmon with three points each and Madison Barstad with a single shot from inside for two.
The Vikings host their next three games which began last Friday, November 22 against Eau Claire Regis followed by last evening’s (Tuesday, November 26) game with Bloomer. Colfax will then enjoy a nine-day break before welcoming rival Elk Mound on Thursday, December 5 for the Dunn-St. Croix Conference opener.
