BOYCEVILLE — An early 20-0 lead for the Colfax Vikings helped lift them to their first win of the 2019 season, a 34-14 Dunn-St. Croix triumph over the Boyceville Bulldogs last Friday, September 20 at Boyceville High School’s Evenson Field to spoil the Bulldogs’ homecoming celebration.
It was the Vikings first win since September 14 of 2018, where they handed the Bulldogs a 42-8 defeat.
“We were beat in all phases of the game tonight,” Boyceville head coach Michael Roemhild said. “Colfax really shut down our run game to the outside. They brought the intensity and we backed down. You will have that with a young team that is still trying to find its way.”
The Vikings (1-4, 1-1) dominated a majority of both halves, scoring 20 unanswered points in the first and second quarter, until the Bulldogs (2-3, 1-2) finally put themselves on the board with a 6-yard on the ground touchdown courtesy of Brendan Sempf with just 36 seconds left before halftime.
Colfax scored the only points in the third quarter, increasing their lead to 28-6 heading into the final 12 minutes of regulation.
A mid-fourth quarter touchdown for the Vikings set them well ahead at 34-6 with 7:07 to go. Although the Bulldogs answered just seconds later on a 7-yard run from Sempf once again, it was too little too late and Boyceville walked off their home field in defeat.
Colfax used both rushing and passing yards to claim victory, pushing 238 yards on the ground and 108 in the air for a total of 359 yards.
Boyceville found more success in their passing game on Friday, with Connor Sempf completing 12 of 19 passes for a total of 189 yards. He connected with Tyler Dormanen on two passes for 63 yards while Brendan Sempf and Ira Bialzik each ended the night with four catches for 46 yards. Brendan Sempf also collected the majority of the Bulldog’s rushing yards with 68 on 14 carries and scored both their touchdowns.

“I thought Connor threw the ball well when he was given time,” Roemhild said of his quarterback. “There were times our offensive line looked really sharp and times that we didn’t.”
Roemhild went on to give credit to Jacob Granley, Josiah Berg, Bialzik and Dormanen for their offensive efforts.
The Bulldogs will be challenged once again as they meet with the undefeated Cardinals (5-0, 2-0) this upcoming Friday at Spring Valley High School. The Cardinals defeated Glenwood City 45-8 this past Friday.
