COLFAX — A good mix of youth and experience will make up the track and field teams for the Colfax Vikings this season.
Although the Vikings lost some key athletes from last season, second-year coach Chuck Brown is looking forward to working with a lot of new faces as well as his returning athletes.
Gone through graduation is Jeanette Hydukovich who leaves with the school records in the discus and shot put as well as a state championship in the discus her senior year. Fellow thrower Kennedy Shane also graduated and was a consistent point earner behind Hydukovich. Both were four-year letter winners and were great kids with amazing leadership skills, according to Brown.
Due to a knee injury during basketball season, Kaysen Goodell, a three-year state qualifier in the distance runs, will miss her senior year on the track.
Leading the way this year are seniors Nate Edwards, John Riebe, Logan Swartz and Theo Hovde for the boys and Hannah Peterson, Lauren Becker and Rosie Sonnentag for the girls. Time will tell which events all the athletes will compete in.
The junior class consists of Bowen Seehaver, Blake Sparrgrove, Charlie Charbonneau and Grant Palewicz for the boys and Clara Hydukovich for the girls.
Kendall Wilson is the only sophomore girl this season while Izaiah Sarauer, Hayden Sarauer, Liem Schotter, Sam Ralph, James Wahl, Mason Stevens and Bradon Hall will compete for the boys.
Freshmen rounding out the team include Isaiah Entzminger, Jacob Wahl and Carson Walley for the boys along with Aubrey Nelson, Sydney Henricks, Veronika Leavens, Megan Christensen and Alayna McClelland for the girls.
Coach Brown believes the team strengths this season will come in the mid-distance races and the jumping and throwing events.
“We have a lot of new faces so we are not sure what we have with some of these kids,” coach Brown stated. “But we look forward to working with them. We want to be at our best in May for the Dunn-St. Croix Conference meet, the regionals and the sectionals,” he concluded.
Although Brown is a second-year head coach, he was an assistant for the Vikings for 14 seasons. Assisting him this year are Ally Heidorn, Courtney Sarauer, Tina Johnson and Nate Hydukovich.
