BOYCEVILLE — The Boyceville baseball team and head coach Michael Roemhild are faced with replacing some significant talent this spring.
Graduation hit the Bulldogs hard as they lost a combined 15 years of varsity starting experience from a squad that finished 14-6 overall a season ago including a 10-4 conference mark, good for third place in a strong Dunn-St. Croix race that saw Elk Mound win another title while Mondovi finished second just a game ahead of Boyceville.
Gone are six starters from the 2024 squad, five of which filled the Bulldogs’ starting lineups for two or more years. Headlining that half dozen was four-year starter and four-time all-conference selection Braden Roemhild who was the team’s lead-off hitter and center fielder. He also holds Boyceville baseball’s all-time career stolen base record. Devin Halama, who was second in hits with 29, was a three-year starter including the past two as a pitcher and an all-conference pick. Nick Olson also started the past three seasons for the Bulldogs and was an all-conference pick in 2023 and 2024. Wyatt Sell and Paul Kurschner held down starting positions the past two years and Zach Kersten had a great senior season finishing as an honorable mention all-conference selection.
All six of the aforementioned were among the Bulldogs’ top seven hitters a season ago.
But, the “cupboard” is not bare for Coach Roemhild, who begins his 11th season with a 115-62 record and a 2021 state championship.
Returning to the fold are team leaders and standout juniors Carson Roemhild, Landyn Leslie and Zach Hellendrung.
Carson Roemhild was the Bulldogs’ top pitcher and a first team all-conference honoree a season ago. He finished the 2024 campaign with a 5-1 record on the mound, a 2.93 Earned Run Average (ERA) in 40 and two-third inning and struck out 65 batters. Roemhild also led the offense with 32 hits (7 doubles and a home run) and 31 runs scored.
Joining Roemhild on the mound again will be Landyn Leslie whom Coach Roemhild sees as a great complement to his top thrower. And when he is not pitching, Leslie will be playing at shortstop.
Hellendrung will be a big bat in the Bulldogs’ lineup according to the head coach. He will likely be another big pitching arm that Coach Roemhild describes as the “cherry on top” with Carson and Landyn.
Boyceville has an even mix of upper and lower classmen with 12 in each group including nine incoming freshman.
“I think, just like every year, I have freshmen who are hungry to start and compete for spots at the Varsity level. I also have a senior group that is looking to find their starting role for the first time at the varsity level,” said Coach Roemhild.
This year’s seniors are Ryker Benitz, Dominic Anderson, Nate Jensen, Carson Lindstrom and Talen Kietzer. Filling out the rest of the junior class membership are Bradley Maes, Owen Konsti, Isaac Williams and Owen Duncan.
Pitching and baseball knowledge will be strengths of the team according to Coach Roemhild while the lack of overall varsity experience may be a weakness.
“Our goals are really simple – get on base, score runs, and don’t make errors. If we do those things I think we will surprise a few people,” Coach Roemhild stated.
In this year’s Dunn-St. Croix title chase, Roemhild has tabbed Elk Mound and Mondovi as the top two contenders once again stating that both teams are well coached and have good athletes in all positions.
Brian Roemhild, Trevor Hollister and Chris Ames will serve as assistant coaches.
