COLFAX — After winning just one wrestling dual the first month of the season, Boyceville won three times that in just its first competition of the new year.
Boyceville won three of its four duals and finished in a tie for first place at a five-team, dual-format tournament hosted by the Bloomer-Colfax Raptors at Colfax High School last Friday, January 3.
The Bulldogs shared first place with host Bloomer-Colfax and Arcadia who also finished the evening with a 3-1 mark.
Boyceville defeated Bloomer-Colfax 46-36 and lost to Arcadia 51-27. Bloomer-Colfax nipped Arcadia 40-39 to create a three-way tie for the title. All three of the aforementioned teams also defeated undermanned squads from Thorp/Owen-Withee and Bruce. Boyceville prevailed 78-3 against Thorp/O-W and 75-6 versus Bruce.
With these most recent outcomes at Colfax, the Bulldogs improved their dual record to 4-10.
The return of wrestlers like Alex Obermueller and Rony Ramos to the varsity lineup helped the cause according Boyceville head coach Jamie Olson.
“Getting Rony Ramos and Alex Obermueller back in the line-up is a big step in the right direction. Whenever you can fill in holes with quality guys like these two, winning dual meets becomes a lot easier,” he stated.

Boyceville’s effort, however, was spearheaded by a quartet of wrestlers – Jack Kurschner, Isaiah Romero, Zach Hellendrung and Victor Pattermann – that finished unbeaten in all four of the duals.
Hellendrung, who wrestled at 285 pounds, and Pattermann, who competed at 138 pounds, both posted a trio of first-period pins among their four victories last Friday. Jack Kurschner scored a pair of pins at 157 pounds.
Alex Obermueller and Mark Knops both finished 3-1.
In addition, Liam Moore (190), Bryce Christopherson (150) and Ivan Ferrel (106) each finished 2-0 thanks to a pair of forfeits.
Boyceville was matched against Arcadia in the opening round. The Raiders held a slim 22-21 advantage as the dual headed into the lower weight matches where the Bulldogs had some unfilled weights.
The Raiders won five straight bouts, 106 through 132, via a technical fall, two forfeits and a pair of pins to claim a 51-21 lead and the victory. Victor Pattermann scored the Bulldogs’ final victory at 138 pounds to make the final tally, 51-27, in Arcadia’s favor.
“I thought we wrestled okay against Arcadia, we didn’t match up well with them and having Jack Gruenhagen out hurt also,” stated Olson.
After a second-round bye, Boyceville squared off against Bloomer-Colfax. The Bulldogs got pins from Jack Kurschner (165), Mark Knopps (175), Isaiah Romero (215) and Zach Hellendrung (285) and a forfeit to Cole Retz at 190 to forge a 30 to 6 lead.
Much like its dual versus Arcadia, however, the Raptors won five consecutive lower-weight matches – three via quick first-period pins and two by forfeit – to move in front 36 to 30.

But, Boyceville rallied to win the final three weight classes and the dual. Pattermann and Obermueller scored pins at 138 and 150, respectively, while Bryce Humpal won a 10-0 major decision at 144 pounds. Those 16 team points resulted in a 46-36 victory for the Bulldogs.
“I thought we recovered from that loss fast and beat a Bloomer/Colfax team that had just beaten Arcadia,” Olson said. “But, again if you can win the flip and get match ups you have a chance and that’s what happened in that match.”
“I thought Bryce Humpal and Alex Obermueller came out and wrestled great matches to seal the win against Bloomer/Colfax,” he added.
Boyceville’s final two duals were against Thorp/Owen-Withee and Bruce. Both squads had several openings which made for quick competitions and for the Bulldogs.
Against Thorp/O-W, Boyceville received 11 forfeits and earned a pair of first-period pin falls by Hellendrung (285) and Pattermann (138). Thorp’s only win came via a decision in the final match at 157. The final score was Boyceville 78, Thorp/O-W 3.
The Bulldogs fifth and final round match-up was just as lopsided with the locals taking home a 75-6 win over Bruce who had just two wrestlers compete in the meet.
“Bruce and Thorp are struggling with numbers, but what small wrestling school isn’t,” noted Olson.
“I look forward to the rest of the season and hopefully we can fill a full team down the road and compete at a higher level than we have been,” he concluded.
The Bulldogs host rival and three-time defending conference champion Glenwood City this Thursday, January 9th in the Dunn-St. Croix opener for both schools. Boyceville will then travel to Merril on Saturday for the Bluejay Invitational.
