COLFAX — Since 1969, there have been nine Colfax Vikings boys’ basketball players who have scored more than 1,000 points.
Eight of the nine were able to attend the 3rd Annual Colfax Boys’ Basketball Golf Tournament at the Whitetail Golf Course on Saturday, June 15.
“This was the first year of recognizing a group. We would like to start honoring a group each year. We have not yet decided on a group to honor for next year’s event,” said Nick Heit, one of the organizers for the golf tournament.
Heit teaches at Colfax Elementary and also has recently been hired as the head basketball coach at Colfax High School after previously serving an assistant basketball coach.
This year’s fund-raising golf tournament had more than twice the number of teams as last year.
“We had 28 teams and 112 golfers for our outing. This was the third year of the fund raiser,” Heit said.
“I work out at Whitetail and thought of putting on a golf tournament after my first year at Colfax. We had 12 teams our first year and 14 teams last year. We have more than doubled the size of our outing in two years,” he said.
Jaci Ackerlund, who serves on the Colfax Board of Education, contacted all of the 1000-point scorers about coming to the tournament.
“It seemed like most of the people seemed very interested in coming back. Each 1000-point scorer got a t-shirt with a list of the years they played and how many points they scored,” Heit said.
After the golf outing, Derek Westholm, who teaches music in the Colfax school district, played live music for the event.
Westholm also performed at the Colfax Free Fair Friday evening.

CHS and youth programs
The boys’ basketball golf tournament raises funds to benefit both the Colfax High School and youth basketball programs.
The fund raiser helps pay for a variety of expenses, “from practice jerseys to all the youth tournaments throughout the year, and also helps with high school summer leagues. This tournament has been a tremendous help to our program,” Heit said.
“The tournament is just a fun day. It’s a great event to get the community together and to get alumni back into town,” he said.
The boys’ basketball golf tournament “is always the same weekend as the Colfax fair so people have something to come back for other than the golf tournament,” Heit said.
“The high school boys have had a successful off-season so far with our lifting program and summer league games,” he said.
