The Boyceville softball team was looking to exact a bit of revenge and at the same time earn a share of the conference lead when the Colfax Vikings came to the Bulldogs’ home diamond at Tiffany Creek Elementary on Monday, April 22.
Instead, Colfax left town with sole possession of first place and an unblemished Dunn-St. Croix record following a 6-1 triumph that gave the Vikings the regular-season sweep of the Bulldogs. Colfax had won the pair’s first meeting back on April 9 by a 9-1 count.
Three days later, Boyceville traveled to Spring Valley for another conference contest. The Bulldogs rebounded for a 12-2 win in five innings for a sweep of the Red Birds.
With the split, the Bulldogs entered this week with a 7-2 conference record, two games behind the 9-0 Vikings, and are 10-2 in all games this season. Boyceville has a pair of conference road games – at Elk Mound Tuesday and in Mondovi Thursday – before returning to its home field this Friday to host a non-conference game against Prairie Farm. The Bulldogs will then welcome Durand-Arkansaw for a D-SC contest next Monday, May 6.
Colfax
The Vikings entered the April 22 contest at 6-0 in conference play while the Bulldogs were 6-1 with their only loss coming from the Vikings a few weeks prior.
The game had all the makings of an exciting contest but the pitching turned out to be the difference. Colfax hurler Laikyn Beyer whiffed 14 Bulldog batters and although the Vikings struck out 12 times themselves, they used 14 free passes and some timely hits to score enough runs for the win.
After a scoreless first two innings, Colfax broke through when, after loading the bases, Hannah Peterson blasted a single to bring two runs in. Audrey Ebert followed by banging a double to bring in another run and when the inning ended it was 4-0 for the Vikings.
Beyer held the Bulldogs in check and the Vikings tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh to make it 6-0.
Boyceville scored its only run in the bottom of the seventh when Jadynn Traxler led off the Bulldogs’ final at bat with a single and scored a two-out RBI single by senior Cora Leslie, but Beyer got the Bulldogs’ Paige Fenton to hit into a game-ending fielder’s choice to preserve the Vikings’ victory.
Boyceville freshman hurler Aubrey Malean took the pitching loss as she allowed only six hits and struck out 11 opponents but surrendered 14 walks that helped the Vikings plate all six of their runs.
Zoey Hellendrung and Cora Leslie both went 2-for-3 to account for four of the Bulldogs half dozen hits. One of Hellendrung’s hits went for a double.

Spring Valley
After limited opportunities at home versus Colfax, the Bulldogs’ offense found more success when it played in Spring Valley Thursday, April 25.
The Bulldogs collected 11 hits compared to six for the host Cardinals which resulted in a dozen runs and a shortened road victory as Boyceville triumphed 12 to 2 in five innings.
The Bulldogs scored five runs in the second and fourth innings to go ahead 10-0. The Cardinals finally plated a run in the bottom of the fourth and another in the fifth, but in between Boyceville added its final two runs to put the ten-rule into effect for the win.
Seniors Sarah Stoveren and Cora Leslie each had a pair of hits in three trips to the plate. Stovern scored twice and had two RBIs. Jadynn Traxler and Hannah Dunn both doubled with Dunn tallying a trio of RBIs.
Aubrey Malean pitched a complete game, striking out a dozen, walking only two and scattering six hits for just two runs to pick up the win.
