C/EM golfers hold on to third heading into D-SC tourney

Following a fourth-place finish at the Valley Golf Course in Mondovi last Monday, May 17, the Colfax/Elk Mound golf team slipped into a third-place conference tie with the host Buffaloes who finished third on their home course.
But, in the final conference nine holer two days later at Glen Hills near Glenwood City, Colfax/Elk Mound rebounded, finishing third to retake sole possession of third place.
Heading into yesterday’s 18-hole Dunn-St. Croix Conference tournament at the Rolling Green Golf Course in Durand, C/EM held a one-point advantage – 24 to 23 – over Mondovi. Whoever prevails between the two squads in the conference tournament will earn third place while the other will finish in fourth.
Meanwhile Durand, who won all nine of the conference’s regular season meets, and Glenwood City had locked up first and second place finishes, respectively, regardless of their finishes in the conference tourney.
Colfax/Elk Mound also has a pair of freshmen golfers in contention for all-conference honors. Zane Brice, with 30 points, is currently sitting in tenth on the individual leader board, good for the final spot on the all-conference second team while Jace Acker is tied for 11th with 27 points.
All team and individual points earned in the conference tournament are doubled.
The WIAA tournament is set to begin next week with Colfax/Elk Mound competing in Division 2 regional at Trempealeau Mountain in Arcadia on Tuesday, June 1. The first four teams and top four individuals from non-qualify teams at regionals will advance to the sectional meet at Skyline Golf Course in Black River Falls on Tuesday, June 8. State is set for June 14-15 at Trappers Turn in Wisconsin Dells.
Mondovi
The host Buffaloes edged out Colfax/Elk Mound by three strokes to finish third on their home course last Monday.
Mondovi finished with a 210 score compared to Colfax/Elk Mound’s 213 which put them in fourth for the meet at the Valley GC.
The finish allowed Mondovi to move into a tie for third with C/EM in the conference team standings with 21 points a piece.
Colfax junior Luke Blanchard led the locals with a score of 49 in the nine-hole meet.
A freshmen quartet rounded out Colfax/Elk Mound’s other varsity scores. Jace Acker tallied a 52, Riley Krall shot a 54, Zane Brice carded a 58, and Matt Hanson signed out with a 64.
Durand easily won its eighth D-SC meet in as many contests with a 168 led by Dawson Kurth’s 38 for his fifth medalist award of the season. Glenwood City came in second with a 204 and Spring Valley/Elmwood had only three varsity golfers and did not register a team score.
After scoring a 248, Colfax/Elk Mound was a distant second to Durand (199) in the junior varsity competition.
The C/EM junior varsity was led by Colfax junior Tristan Lenz and Mounder sophomore Ty Meyer who both shot 60s. Elk Mound freshman Ethan Oas was next with a 61, followed by Colfax freshman Connor Albricht with a 67, and Mounder sophomore Chance Peters with a 68.
Glen Hills
Colfax/Elk Mound tallied a score of 208 at Glen Hills Wednesday, May 19 to finish three strokes ahead of Mondovi for third place.
That allowed the local linksters to once again take sole possession of third place in the Dunn-St. Croix conference standings.
All five of Colfax/Elk Mound’s varsity players finished with scored in the 50s headlined by Brice Zane’s 50. Luke Blanchard was just a stroke back with a 51, Matt Hanson shot a 53, Jace Acker rounded out the team scoring with a 54. Riley Krall shot a 59.
Durand won the meet with a 169 while host Glenwood City came in second at 203.
Dawson Kurth won his sixth medalist honor of the season with a 39 to take a commanding ten-point advantage over teammate Charlie Brenner atop the individual standings.
Chance Peters turned in a great score of 46 to lead the C/EM junior varsity. Tristan Lenz finished with a 54, Ethan Oas had a 56, Lauren Horchem hit for a 68, and Chance Smith carded a 71.
Overall, the C/EM JV took second with a 224 compared to Durand’s 212.
