River Falls man dies when bus rolls on him at Cedar Lake Speedway

A tragic accident on the opening night of the 2020 race season at Cedar Lake Speedway near New Richmond has claimed the life of a 62-year-old River Falls man.

Edward A. Nicholson died last Friday evening, May 20 when a bus rolled on top of him while he was attempting to help other track personnel clear the track following an incident during the popular school bus race.

At 9:01 p.m. last Friday, the St. Croix County Emergency Communication Center received a 911 call, of a subject that had been injured at Cedar Lake Speedway, at 2275 CTH CC, in Star Prairie Township.

After a collision during a school bus race, on the race track, safety crew personnel were tending to the damaged buses. Nicholson, who was a member of the safety crew, was assisting with clearing the track when one of the damaged buses rolled onto him. Nicholson was extricated and lifesaving efforts were attempted by emergency personnel.

Unfortunately, those efforts were unsuccessful and Nicholson was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Croix County Medical Examiner.

Assisting at the scene was New Richmond EMS, New Richmond Fire and Rescue, and Life Link III.

This incident remains under investigation by the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office, Medical Examiner’s Office, and OSHA.
