BOYCEVILLE — Two candidates are running for one position on the Boyceville Board of Education in the April 7 election.
Incumbent Steve Bird filed notification of non-candidacy by the deadline in December, and the candidates are Steven B. Olson and Nat Timper.
The Tribune Press Reporter sent out questionnaires to the candidates.
Here are Steven Olson’s answers to the questionnaire.
• What is your occupation?
I am Conservation Planner – Soil Health Specialist for the Dunn County Environmental Services Department. In addition I am the owner operator of a 525 acre 90 cow dairy operation where we employ 1 full time and 2 part time employees.
• Tell us about your family.
I have been married to my spouse Angie for 19 years we have 2 children who attend Boyceville Schools; Megan, who is a junior and Nick who is an 8th grader.
• What is your educational background?
I graduated from Boyceville High School and from Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton WI with an Associates Degree in Applied Science as a Natural Resources Technician.
• Why did you decide to run for the Boyceville Board of Education?
To serve the Community that has provided so much for me and my family.
• What makes you suited to serve on the school board?
My broad base of education and experience of working with people to come to a common ground of understanding and conserving our community for generations to come.
• Besides the budget, what do you believe to be the biggest challenges or issues facing the school district?
Other than budget challenges I am not aware of any other major challenges at this time. Believe me after managing a dairy business for the past decade plus I am used to operating under tight budgets and making some tough decisions. If I am fortunate enough to get elected and serve on the board I am sure I will get enlightened on what those other challenges may be.
• How would you suggest addressing those challenges or issues for the Boyceville school district?
A big part of life is dealing with challenges and issues. They come at you in many different forms and circumstances, I will weigh the circumstances surrounding the challenge or issue and make my decision based on the better good of the community.
• What other ideas do you have for improving the school district?
I am not running for school board to make change, I am running to keep the ship afloat. I believe our district is in a good position and heading in the right direction.
• Why are you the best candidate?
I will be honest with you, I am not sure I am the best candidate for the Boyceville Board of Education, I am sure there are others out there that would do a fine job. I just want to give back to the Community that has provided me my education, place to raise my family and opportunity to operate a small business.
