ELK MOUND — A 17-year-old driver collided with a train at a railroad crossing just east of Elk Mound on Monday, December 9.
At around 3:30 p.m. a week ago Monday, the Wisconsin State Patrol, Union Pacific Railroad Police, the Dunn County Sheriff’s Department, the Colfax Rescue Squad, the Elk Mound fire department and the Elk Mound police department responded to a vehicle versus train crash, according to a news release from Elk Mound Police Chief Chad Weinberger.
The crash occurred at the railroad crossing at 970th Street, also known as Stardust Drive, just north of East Menomonie Street/U.S. Highway 12 in the village of Elk Mound.
According to the news release, “Preliminary information suggests the 17-year-old juvenile driver was the lone occupant in a vehicle southbound on 970th Street, operating too fast for conditions, as the driver was unable to stop and collided with the train (that was) already crossing the intersection.”
The juvenile driver was released to a parent at the scene of the crash, the news release notes.
The crash remains under investigation by the Wisconsin State Patrol and Union Pacific Railroad Police.
